LAREDO, Texas -- Texas A&M International claimed a sweep of Midwestern State in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Softball Field.
TAMIU (24-17) claimed the opener 5-1, then took a 6-2 win in Game No. 2.
Midwestern State dropped to 13-27.
The Mustangs close the season with a doubleheader at Texas Woman's Saturday afternoon at Diane Baker Field in Denton. First pitches are slated for noon and 2 p.m.
GAME 1: Texas A&M International 5, Midwestern State 1
Texas A&M International's Shelby Edwards smashed a two-run homer to make Erika Cortez' pitching gem to stand up for a 5-1 win over Midwestern State in Game No. 1 Sunday at Dustdevil Stadium.
The Dustdevils struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning fueled by run-scoring doubles -- both to the right-field gap -- by Cortez and Morgan Chavarria to push out to a 3-1 lead.
Edwards put the game away with a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the sixth.
Cortez improved to 13-7 in the circle limiting MSU to one run on five hits. She recorded seven strikeouts and three walks.
Hanna Hetherington connected on her third homer of the season to open scoring in the top of the second inning, while
Maddy Holder hit a pair of doubles to lead the Mustangs' offensive charge.
Kathryn Wells took the loss for Midwestern State as the junior right-hander permitted three runs on five with seven walks in 4 1/3 innings.
GAME 2: Texas A&M International 6, Midwestern State 2
Texas A&M International's Victoria Gonzalez and Melanie Gamboa drove in two runs each to lead the Dustdevils to a 6-2 win over Midwestern State in Sunday's finale at Dustdevil Stadium.
The Dustdevils (24-17) batted around in a four-run fifth inning highlighted by Briana Arredondo's two-run single to center field. TAMIU added a run on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to provide the winning difference.
Midwestern State (13-27) pushed out an early in the top of the third inning when
Haley Butler scored when
Marley Eller reach on a fielder's choice.
The Dustdevils answered with a run on Heather Ruiz' solo homer in the bottom of the frame, then took the lead in the fourth on Gamboa's RBI double down the left-field line.
MSU tied the game in the top of the fifth when
Ashley Turner's sacrifice fly plated
Haley Butler, who had reach on a leadoff, infield single before advancing to second on a wild pitch and went to third on
Carson Solis' ground out to second base.
Texas A&M International answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Butler led the MSU attack by going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Freshman
Addi Hanna (3-9) took the loss for the Mustangs allowing five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
