WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 22 Midwestern State sweeps Metropolitan State-Denver 7-0 in their final match of the weekend. The Sunday afternoon win puts the home squad at 4-3 for the 2021 spring season. This also extends MSU's winning streak over MSD to 13 wins over 21 years.
Doubles play started strong with the team winning two of three sets to gain the point.
To start,
Ben Westwick and
Angel Palacios beat Billy McDermott and Alejandro Martinez 6-1 at number two doubles. Then
Brice Bradshaw and
Quentin Scharfenberg dropped to Jack McDermott and Jean-Loup Auzias 1-6 at number three doubles.
The number one doubles win grabbed the team point for the Mustangs.
Alex Martinez Roca and
Alexandre Crepy narrowly escaped Mateo Besada and Daniel Llorente 7-5. Midwestern State started singles play at 1-0.
No. 5 Palacios continued the scoring spree at number three singles. The senior won over Besada 6-4, 6-2. The Mustangs were up 2-0 over the Roadrunners.
Number one singles saw no. 43 Martinez Roca beat out Llorente 6-2, 6-3. Westick did the same at number two singles over J. McDermott (6-3, 7-6).
Crepy and Martinez went three sets at number four singles. Crepy took the first set 6-4 and Martinez won the second 6-4. The freshman grabbed the final set 6-2 to win Midwestern State's fifth point.
Alberto Diaz took on David Kijak at number five singles. Diaz won 6-4, 6-1. In the final match of the night, Abhi Venkatachalam found the final point for MSU in his 6-4, 6-2 win at number six singles. His opponent was Auzias.
The Mustangs will head to Bolivar, Mo., for two final non-conference matches to get ready for Lone Star play. On Friday, March 12, the team faces Southwest Baptist at 9 a.m. Then on Saturday, March 13, MSU takes on Norwest Missouri State at 10 a.m. Both matches will take place at John A. Bryant Tennis Center.
