Mustangs make it five straight with victory over Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. – No. 22-ranked Midwestern State extended its winning streak to four Friday beating No. 25 Southwest Baptist 6-1.

The Mustangs started strong by gaining the doubles point. Ben Westwick and Angel Palacios competed at number one doubles for the first time this season. The pair dropped the set 4-6 to Carlos Corser and Max Sanoja.

Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy won their first try at number two doubles. They beat Youssef Nabil and Adham Gaber 6-4. Brice Bradshaw and Quentin Scharfenberg grabbed the point with their 7-5 win over David Szeri and Alvaro Nunez at number three doubles.

On the singles side, no. 43 Martinez Roca fell in two to 19th ranked Gaber at number one singles. This put the score even at 1-1 for MSU and SBU.

Crepy recorded another point for the Mustangs at number four singles. He beat Szeri in three sets going 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. Fifth ranked Palacios followed up with a three set win over Nunez. Palacios dropped the first 0-6 and won out the last two 6-4, 7-6.

The Mustangs were up 3-1 with three more matches to finish.

Next up was Westwick and Corser at number two singles. Westwick won set one 7-6, while Corser had the second 6-3. Westick registered the final set 6-4 and the Mustangs' fourth point.

Number five singles saw Scharfenberg pull through over Nabil 6-2, 6-3. The final nail in the coffin was the number six singles' win by Bradshaw. He defeated Fabian Neff 6-0, 6-1.

This secured the 6-1 win for Midwestern State. The squad now sits at a 5-3 record.

MSU will stay in Bolivar for another day to take on Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, March 13. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at Bryant Tennis Center.
