Mustangs' night ruined by two SOSU walk-off runs

DURANT, Okla. – Payton Streetman and Kyia Monahwee delivered late game heroics to lift Southeastern Oklahoma State to a doubleheader sweep of Midwestern State here Tuesday afternoon.

Streetman's eighth-inning run-scoring single pushed the Savage Storm to a 5-4 in the Game 1, while Monahwee launched a home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2 to lift SOSU to a 1-0 victory.

Jacey Henry started the game off with a single up the middle for her 21st hit of the season on a pitch by Ashley Hedrick. Ashley Turner was able to reach on a muffed throw and Henry moved to second. The bases were loaded when Mattye Tyler took one for the team on a hit pitch. Hanna Hetherington came up big with a single that pushed in Turner and Henry. The team could not convert the rest of the inning and stood ahead by two.

Henry took her place on the mound for the Mustangs and garnered three quick outs against the Savage Storm.

In the second inning, Daylan Inkman recorded her first hit in two years when she drove the ball down the right field line. She then scored the third run of the game when Turner doubled to left center. Amberlyn Walsworth then switched with Hedrick to pitch in the middle of the second. Hedrick allowed three runs on four hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings. Inkman later grabbed her second hit in the top of the sixth.

SEO put a point on the board when Monahwee got a solo homer to left center. The home side added two more in the third inning with a Cheyenne Mahy home run to drive in two RBIs. With the hit, the game sat tied at 3-3 leading into the fourth.

MSU took the lead again in the fifth after Henry registered her second hit of the game in a double down the left field line. Turner's bunt and a throwing error by the Savage Storm allowed Henry to gain the fourth point for the team.

The celebration did not last long as Mahy struck again with a triple to bring in the tying run. She then put in time on the mound, taking over from Walsworth. Bailey Brenek's single in the seventh inning could not amount and the match headed into extra innings.

Streetman's walk-off double ended the game in the bottom of the eighth to put Southeastern ahead 5-4 in the first game. Mahy finished as the winning pitcher with no runs on one hit and two strikeouts in two innings. Henry moved to 5-6 for the season. The junior posted five runs on ten hits with Ks in 7.1 innings pitched.

Micayla Galloway began game two for the Savage Storm. Brenek tallied a hit in the first with her fifth double of the season to right center. Mattye Tyler was up to bat next, but left in the middle due to an apparent leg injury. Haley Butler finished out the at bat and took Tyler's place at second base.

Kaitlyn Turner collected another start for Midwestern State Softball. She and Galloway battled in the game to keep the game scoreless up until Galloway retired in the fifth. Her 4.2 innings saw zero runs on two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Mahy put in another pitching appearance after a Marley Eller walk. The junior caught her third double of the year and 12th overall earlier in the second.
A triple by Gracie Ore put the Mustangs in a tough spot in the bottom of the sixth. Bailey Beard pinch ran for the freshman and almost reached home on a bunt by Augusta Duty. Brenek made a brilliant defensive play by grabbing the bunted ball with her bare hand and tagging Beard as she tried to reach home plate. Duty reached first on the fielder's choice but SEO could not convert.

The home team concluded the second game with another walk-off, this time Monahwee's second homer of the game. K. Turner continued her tough pitching run by allowing only one run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Mahy ended the game with no hits on no runs with one walk and no strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Midwestern State continues Lone Star Conference play on Friday, April 9, in San Angelo, Texas. The team takes on Angelo State at Mayer Field at 5 and 7:30 p.m.
