No. 6 UT Tyler shuts down Midwestern State

TYLER, Texas – Midwestern State saw a similar outcome against another ranked team in No. 6 UT Tyler. After hanging with the home side in the first game, only dropping by three runs, the Mustangs left the second game wide open for the Patriots to bring in eight runs in five innings. The team now drops to 4-8 in Lone Star Conference play with 18 more matches to play.

Jacey Henry started her ninth ball game as the pitcher for MSU. In her fourth full game, the junior put up one strike out and four runs off four hits. Henry faced 26 batters and added a stolen base on the offensive side.

Neither team garnered any runs in the first inning, but both earned one in the second. For Midwestern State, Marley Eller's sacrifice fly put Henry in at home for the first run of the game. Bailey Brenek also tallied a single to third. UT Tyler followed up with a run by Grace Davis off of Bayli Simon's single up the middle.

With the score tied at one, the teams headed on to the third. Anna Williams began strong with a double to right center. This was the junior's ninth hit and second double of the season. Carson Solis pushed Williams to third with a single up the middle. Unfortunately, the team could not drive them in and dropped the inning with two left on base.

Three quick outs in the bottom of the third and top of the fourth led into the bottom of the fourth when the Patriots scored their second run. Simon stuck again, this time with a triple to right center to drive in Mak Dominguez.

The Mustangs were unable to convert in the top of the fifth and fell unlucky in the bottom half. A two RBI home run by Amanda Marek was the final straw as MSU fell short in the next two innings. The Patriot's pitcher, Payton Foster, closed out the game with 11 strike outs and allowed one run off three hits.

For the latter half of the double header, Kaitlyn Turner found her way to the pitcher's mound. The freshman looked to break her four-game losing streak against the Patriots. In the batter's box, Solis grabbed another single up the middle but was left on base.

UT Tyler scored the first run this game. Michelle Arias scored on a walked batter to put the score at 1-0. Then Courtney Plocheck's single pushed in another run and ended the first inning ahead by two.

A relatively quiet second inning led to the third, which was also uneventful for the Mustangs. The Patriots added two more to their score with Davis and Simon bringing in runs. In the fifth, Turner retired to Addi Hanna. Turner faced 18 batters with two strikeouts, three walks, and four runs on five hits. With Hanna on the mound, the home side drove in three more runs for a 7-0 shutout.

Kathryn Wells saw her fourth appearance for the season in the bottom of the fourth. A wild pitch saw UT Tyler put in their eighth run of the game. Maddy Holder drove a single into right field in the top of the fifth inning to help her team stay alive, but there was no conversion. UT Tyler pitcher, Erin Hill, concluded the match-up with 17 batters faced, six strikeouts, one walk, and two hits.

The Mustangs finally return home to Mustangs Park after an eight-game road spree. The team will face Oklahoma Christian in a Lone Star Conference double header on Friday, March 26. First pitch is set for 4 and 6 p.m.
