St. Edward's sends Mustangs to sixth straight loss

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's extended Midwestern State's slide to six games claiming a doubleheader sweep of the Mustangs Sunday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field.

The Hilltoppers claimed the opener 6-3 before taking the finale 6-4 to send the Mustangs to 11-9 on the season and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play.

MSU managed the first run to start the day when Hanna Hetherington was hit by McKenna Leamon's pitch. The loaded bases moved up one and Carson Solis scored to take the lead. Solis put up two hits and one run for the game. The visitors ended the inning without adding another run.

Kaitlyn Turner started on the mound for the Mustangs in the bottom of the first. St. Edward's put in four runs off of a double by Kaylee McQuillan, Jordan Neely hit by a pitch, and a Morgan Arcia walk. SEU led 4-1 heading into the second.

Ashley Turner registered a hit in the next inning for her only hit in four at bats. Unfortunately, Mattye Tyler could not send her in as she flied out to left field. The Mustang defense held the Hilltoppers in the second and third innings.

The home team grabbed their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Arcia and Genisa Marrero-Carter scored off of Valerie Brant's single to left field.

Though MSU tried to come back in the final innings, they could not garner enough runs. Hetherington scored on a fielding error in the sixth and doubled in the top of the seventh for the Mustangs. This was the freshman's fourth double of the year.

Turner pitched six innings with six runs on five hits, four batters walked, four strike outs, and two batters hit by pitch. The freshman faced 28 batters and ended with six errors.

Cadie Belle Currie started for SEU in game two while Addi Hanna got the start for MSU.

The Mustangs started the game strong again by gaining two runs in the top of the first. Marley Eller's single to left field brought in two RBIs – Bailey Brenek and A. Turner. Turner had reached on a bunt and Brenek had singled through the left side.

St. Edward's responded with two runs of their own. Alexis Massie singled up the middle for Marrero to score while McQuillan put up a sacrifice fly to drive in Massie.

Neither team scored again until the third inning. Midwestern State's Brenek doubled to right field for her fourth season double and second hit of the game. She later scored on Eller's double to bring the score to 3-2. After a pitching change for the Hilltoppers, Hetherington scored on a wild pitch.

The lead didn't last long for the Mustangs as St. Edward's put four runs on the board in the bottom of the third.

Midwestern State did not register a hit until the final inning and could not convert, even with A. Turner and Mattye Tyler's singles. The team fell 6-4 in the final game of the day.

Hanna allowed six runs on ten hits in six innings pitched. The freshman faced 31 batters and put in two strikeouts, two walks, and one hit by pitch.

The team will look to get back on track next week on Friday, March 19. The Mustangs face Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lone Star double header will start at 4 p.m. at John Cain Family Softball Field in Commerce, Texas.
