Midwestern State drops two at No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – Midwestern State had a tough foe in No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce in the Friday night double header. The first Lone Star game was a close battle as the home side came out on top, 3-1. MSU could not quite rally in the second match and were swept 0-8 in five innings.

Kaitlyn Turner received her 11th start of the season for MSU. The first inning was decently quiet for both teams with Turner and the Mustangs not allowing any runs.

Trouble stuck in the second with the Lions gaining their first point of the game. Kinsie Hebler's solo homer put the home side up by one. Emily Otto held Midwestern State's batting at zero hits through the third inning.

TAMUC scored again in the bottom of the third off a single from Mackenzie Dugi, putting the score at 2-0. Luckily, Jacey Henry's double to right center in the top of the fourth allowed Ashley Turner to score for the Mustangs. Henry and Turner both had two hits from three at bats in the first game.

Marley Eller added a hit in the top of the fifth in a single to right field.

Commerce scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning from a Madison Schaefer single. K. Turner recorded three runs off seven hits. The freshman put up two strikeouts and four walks in the 29 batters faced. She moves to 4-5 for the season.

Henry started on the mound for Midwestern State after last starting on March 7, against Western New Mexico.

The first inning was uneventful again for both teams, sans Carson Solis gaining her first hit of the day. The right fielder singled up the middle to start the game.
Midwestern State had a small lapse for the second inning when TAMUC put in five of their eight runs. Serina Aguilar doubled to drive in two runs while Ta'Lyn Moddy scored on a dropped fly. Avery Boley's double to left field put in the final run of the inning.

The visiting Mustangs had some work to do. A. Turner pushed things off with a single up the middle and her second hit of the day. Her team could not get her in to home.

Addi Hanna made an appearance on the mound in the bottom of the third. Henry pitched two innings with five runs on seven hits and faced 14 batters.

At the top of the fifth inning, Brooke Taylor joined the single club with a hit to right field.

The Lions put up another big fifth inning to force the conclusion of the game. Moody doubled down the right field line for a RBI while Samantha Dutton's triple drove in two more. Hanna finished with 2.2 innings pitched with three runs on four hits. The freshman had one strikeout from her 13 faced batters.

The Mustangs will have another hard test as they take on No. 6 UT Tyler in their next double header. The Lone Star Conference games will start at 1 and 3 pm on Sunday, March 21. The team will head to Tyler, Texas, to play.
