Rattlers sweep MSU by narrow margins in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Midwestern State fell in their second double header of the week. This time to St. Mary's. Both games were close with the Rattlers winning 4-2 and 1-0. The Mustangs kept a winning record at 11-6 with two more games to play on Sunday.

The first game was low scoring between the two teams, with most of the runs coming early. MSU started the game with a point on the board following Hanna Hetherington's first at bat. She reach first on an error by StMU's catcher, allowing Bailey Brenek to advance to second. Mattye Tyler ran home and Ashley Turner attempted the same, but was tagged out at the plate.

Tyler scored again on Kamrynn Burk's single to right field in the fifth inning. This is Burk's second hit of the season and first RBI. Tyler continued her hitting streak with her single in the first and hit in the fifth to get to 15 straight games.

Up 1-0, the team headed into the bottom of the first for their first chance in the field. Kaitlyn Turner started on the mound for the Mustangs in her 10th start of the season.

The third batter, Abigale Carney, singled up the middle to drive in Reba Reyes and Jayme Johns for two RBIs. The Rattlers took the lead 2-1.

Two innings later, Carney struck again, this time with a homer to left field. She had two more RBIs to put the home squad up by three.

Even though Maddy Holder put in her first hit and double of the year, and A. Turner recorded two hits, Midwestern State could not overcome and fell 4-2. Turner finished with four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The pitcher recorded a 4.76 ERA.

Addi Hanna was on the mound to start the later match between MSU and SMU.

Through stellar pitching and fielding, neither team was able to score a run until the bottom of the fourth. Once again, Carney was at the plate to give a sacrifice fly for an RBI. This time, Bari Christian was the runner.

Holder collected her second hit in the top of the second. Haley Butler collected her second hit of the year in the fifth inning. Carson Solis recorded her second hit of the day.

Julia Cruz and Alex McLennan collected three strikeouts to give St. Mary's the win.

Hanna pitched the most innings in the year thus far with six in the second game of the double header. She only allowed one run on three hits for the least amount of runs allowed by the Mustangs this year. The freshman achieved a 5.60 ERA.

The team will round out the week with their third double header. Midwestern State goes on the road to Austin, Texas, to face St. Edward's in Lone Star Conference games. The Sunday, March 14, competitions are slated to start at 1 and 3 p.m.
