All-Time Series: MSU leads 41-25

LAWTON, Okla. -- Midwestern State is officially in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. The number five Mustangs will travel to number four Cameron on March 2, in a battle to make it to the semifinals. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.

FIVE STORY LINES

1 |  As the number five seed, MSU had only five losses in conference play with none occurring at home. The team was a perfect 7-0 at home to add to their three game steak from the previous season. The only way that the Mustangs can gain a home postseason game is if they become the highest remaining seed after the first round of games. The semifinals take place on Friday, March 5, and the finals are on Saturday, March 6. Against other teams in the bracket, Midwestern State is 2-3 during the regular season. The grabbed wins from Texas A&M Commerce (85-82) and West Texas A&M (87-80), but dropped to West Texas (60-78), Lubbock Christian (54-84) and Commerce (81-110). St. Mary's and Texas A&M International were not featured on the Mustang's schedule.

2 |  MSU and CU played twice during the regular season, back in December. The Mustangs pulled through for the first game, winning 78-71. Frances King led with 23 points, including going 5-5 on free throws. The sophomore also added six assists and one steal. Shawinsay Millar registered 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals against the Aggies. Defensively, the team held Cameron to shooting 36.4 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent on three-pointers.
In the second game of the series, the Aggies avenged with the 75-52 win. Morgan Lenahan was the lone Mustang with double-digit points (12) and totaled five boards, one block, and one steal. Midwestern State shot 25 percent on field goals, the lowest they were held to all season. Cameron shot 45 percent from the field and 41 percent from deep this time around.

3 |  Rebounds are a key successor for the Mustangs with the team sitting fifth in the LSC thanks to their +3.8 rebound margin. The margin ranks 62nd in NCAA Division II of the 219 teams ranked. When out-rebounding their opponents, the team is 10-2 for the season and totaled twelve games with a positive margin. However, Midwestern State is 1-4 when they have a negative margin. Per game, MSU has 40.94 rebounds (696 total), which is second best in the conference and 53rd in the nation. Cameron is 15th in the conference with a -7.9 rebound margin, but seventh with 36.94 rebounds per game. Stephanie Peterson leads the Aggies with 90 total rebounds and a 5.6 average.

Guard Haevyn Risley leads the team in total rebounds and rebounds per game with 106 and 6.2. With these numbers, she ranks at seventh in the LSC for total rebounds and 13th for rebounds per game. The senior garnered four rebounds against UTPB, but Hannah Reynolds, Mandy Withey, and Millar each had six. When the team has 40 rebounds in a game or more, they are 9-2 for the season.

4 |  The offensive duo of Frances King and Lenahan are a force to reckon with. Lenahan averages 14.8 points per game and tallied double figures in 13 of 17 games this season. In three straight games, the senior guard put up 20+ against Angelo State, Texas A&M Commerce, and UT Permian Basin. Collectively the two have scored 442 of the team's 1165 points this season. King has gone for 11.2 points per game with nine double figure games. The guard continues to lead the Mustangs in assists for the season (69) which earns her third best in the conference. She also ranks 53rd in NCAA Division II. King goes for 4.1 assists per game, which is seventh in the LSC and 64th nationally. Last season, she averaged 3.1 assists per game for the whole season.

5 |  Three-pointers will have a big impact in the game for both teams. Cameron ranks first in the Lone Star Conference in three-point attempts (438), makes (138), and per game (8.6). Their attempts rank 28th in the nation while makes are 33rd and per game is 20th. The Aggies also rank first on the defensive side of the line with a 25.3 three defense, good for 12th in NCAA Division II. The Mustangs are close behind with a 31.7 three-point defense, ranked 11th in the LSC. The team recorded 283 attempts from deep and made 87 of them. MSU's average for threes is 5.1 per game. Maighan Hedge leads Cameron with 39 made behind the line and a .398 percent. Lenahan is the leader for threes on Midwestern State with 30 makes and .395 percent.

HEAD COACH CHRISTOPHER REAY is almost to the end of his first full season at the helm of his alma mater. He guided the Mustangs to a 4-6 mark over the final 10 games in 2019-20 serving in an interim role following Noel Johnson's leave of absence to continue her fight against ovarian cancer.  His career coaching record stands at 15-12 (.555) heading into Tuesday's game. Reay served as the top assistant for the previous 10 campaigns playing a hand in guiding MSU to three consecutive NCAA Division II South Central Regionals from 2012-15 as MSU claimed a Lone Star Conference regular and postseason tournament titles in 2012-13. Reay competed two seasons at Midwestern State in 2006-07 and 2007-08 after transferring from SMU helping MSU to an LSC postseason tournament championship and a regional semifinal appearance in 2007.

THE SERIES WITH THE AGGIES

Midwestern State and Cameron meet for the 80th time on Tuesday with the Mustangs holding a 41-25 edge. The December loss to the Aggies cut a four game winning streak that MSU built up over a year. On the road, the Mustangs are 50 percent (20-20) over a 46-year period. At home, the team is up 15-10 over CU. The last time Midwestern State faced Cameron in the Lone Star Conference post season was back in the 2001-02 season. The teams faced up in the semifinals in San Angelo, Texas on Friday, March 1, 2002. MSU defeated number 24 CU 68-59, the first neutral win in the all-time series.
