Mustangs battle against Flagler but turn up 8th in ITA Indoor Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – No. 22 Midwestern fell in their final game of the ITA Team National Indoor Championship to no. 9 Flagler (Fla.) 0-4 at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. The Sunday, Feb. 28, match-up garnered the Mustangs 8th place in the tournament for the second year in a row.

It is interesting because almost an exact year ago, MSU fell to then no. 14 Flagler in the same situation. Though the score did not show it this time around, Midwestern State put up a fight against the Saints.

Angel Palacios and Quentin Scharfenberg walked away with a doubles victory over Nikita Tatyanin and Diego Amilibia 6-3. This was the first win for the pair over the last three days.

At number one doubles, Rodrigo Carvalho and Philipp Lemken overtook Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy 6-1. Martinez Roca and Crepy recorded one win in the tournament against Concordia University Irvine.

Ben Westwick stepped in to play with Alberto Diaz at number three doubles. They barely missed the mark against Rasmus Jonsson and William Jonsson, 6-7.
Flagler claimed the doubles point.

At the singles' level, Flagler took the first three matches to claim the victory. At number one, no. 43 Martinez Roca fell to Carvalho 2-6, 3-6. No, 5 Palacios took a set from Tatyanin, but could not finish the job (0-6, 6-2, 0-6).

The finisher for the Saints came from Rasmus Jonsson against Diaz. Though the match was close, Jonsson won out 6-4, 7-5.

The unfinished matches for the Mustangs were going in the right direction when the match concluded. Scharfenburg upped Lemken in the first set and was only down by one in the second when the game ceased (7-6, 3-4).

Brice Bradshaw was very close to overtaking Max Berner at number five singles with a 6-3, 4-3 score.

For number six singles, Abhi Venkatachalam was one set up on William Jonsson 6-0, 5-5.
