MSU concludes LSC regular season at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Lone Star Conference second-seeded Midwestern State (11-3-3, 8-1-3 LSC) travels to fifth-seeded Angelo State (12-3-2, 7-3-2 LSC) for the final match of the regular season. ASU Soccer field hosts the conference match-up on Saturday, Nov. 6. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. The LSC Championship Tournament schedule will debut following the conclusion of the game.
 

FIVE STORY LINES

1 |  After securing an assist against Texas Woman's, Cassidy Savoy upped her total points to 16 for an 11th rank in the Lone Star Conference. Her average of one point per game also sits 11th in the conference. The sophomore punched six goals and three assists in her breakout season at Midwestern State. Savoy conducted a two-goal match against Northwestern Oklahoma State (9/02) to post her first game-winner and tallied the second in the 1-0 match versus Lubbock Christian (10/27). The forward launched 32 shots and landed 14 on goal for a 0.438 shot on goal percent. Savoy caught a season-high five attempts versus Eastern New Mexico (9/29) and Oklahoma Christian (10/06) while gaining three shots on goal at UT Permian Basin (10/13). In her career, the Fort Worth, Texas native grabbed 40 total shots with 18 going on frame for a 0.450 shot on goal percent. She also claimed 26 games and 1,310 minutes.

Avery McNeme leads Angelo State with 23 points, split into seven goals and nine assists. The graduate student's 1.35 points per game earns sixth in the LSC. Her 50 shots ranks seventh and 26 shots on goal puts her at sixth.

2 |  With 20 seconds left in regulation, Kelly Cannistra bagged her sixth tally of the season against TWU to force overtime. She adds one assist to balance 13 points. The senior collected game-winning goals at UT Permian Basin (10/13) and versus West Texas A&M (10/23). Cannistra put up 27 attempts and found 18 on frame for a 0.667 shot on goal percent. In 17 starts, the forward amounted 1,158 minutes on the season. In her five year career, Cannistra recorded 16 goals to rank 13th in MSU's all-time record book. She adds a 11th highest 14 assists and 46 points. Her five game-winning goals earns 15thh for the Mustangs all-time. The Gilbert, Ariz., native registered 97 shots with 54 going on goal in 83 games played.
 
Four Belles have tallied four goals on the season, including Valerie Solis, Grace Jordan, Cindy Rodriguez and Gabby Villagrand. In total, ASU has 39 goals and a 2.29 average. The defense allowed only 12 goals (0.71 per match)

3 |  Isabella Cruz recorded goals in the Mustangs' past two matches. At UT Tyler (10/30), the freshman recorded her first goal of the season only thirty seconds in. Cruz continued her scoring reign with the game-winner in the battle against Texas Woman's (11/03). Though she doesn't have many goals, the midfielder has not stopped trying. She's made 34 attempts at goal with 17 flying on frame. Cruz notched a season-best four shots against UTT and Lubbock Christian (10/27). With four starts, the Pflugerville, Texas native punched 939 minutes on the season.
 
ASU has a perfect 8-0 record when playing at home in San Angelo, Texas. Five of the eight matches counted as Lone Star Conference games. The Belles last match was a 1-2 overtime loss at St. Edward's on Nov. 3.

4 |  Lauren Freeman sits at five starts and eight appearances for the Mustangs. The junior transfer from Eastern Oklahoma State maintains a perfect 5-0 record with two shutouts against Texas A&M-Commerce (10/20) and Lubbock Christian (10/27). The goalkeeper has 28 stops with a season-high eight versus Texas Woman's (11/03). She faced 79 shots and pulled a 0.848 save percent. The Cleburne, Texas, native recorded 0.79 goals against average while giving up five tallies in 569 minutes.
 
Kira Miller leads the Lone Star Conference with 0.685 goals against average, allowing 12 for the opposition. The senior posted nine shutouts in 17 matches for a 12-3-2 record.

5 |  Midwestern State retained their seventh rank in the second release of the South Central Region Rankings which was posted by the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Committee. The release is the second of three rankings followed by the release of the tournament via a selection show on NCAA.com set for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16. The top six teams from the South Central Region advance to the postseason beginning with the opening two rounds from Nov. 18-21 played at the site of the top two seeds. HEAD COACH RYAN SPENCE begins his fourth season as head coach at his alma mater. In the 2020 season, he led the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. As a player, Spence helped the Mustangs dominate in his four years on the field. He earned All-American from 2008-11 and helped the team reach the Final Four in 2010. His center back prowess assisted in gaining 35 shutouts in his tenure. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, he gained his masters from MSU in 2014-15. From there, Spence moved on as assistant coach at Texas A&M International in 2016 and head coach at Eastern New Mexico in 2017 before coming back to Midwestern State in 2018.
 

SERIES WITH THE BELLES

In a 26 year span, Midwestern State and Angelo State played to an almost even 16-15-7 record. In Lone Star Conference play, the Belles hold the 13-15-6 advantage. When the Mustangs play in San Angelo, Texas, the team is 5-7-5. MSU dropped the last five matches against ASU, starting in 2017. The last loss was a 0-2 fall at home in Wichita Falls, Texas. The last victory for Midwestern State came in 2016 with a 2-0 defeat over Angelo State at Stang Park.
