WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After posting a 5-0 defeat over Biola in the first round, No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona (13-4-3) reaches the second round to face No. 8 Midwestern State (16-2-1) at Stang Park. The Mustangs and the Broncos battle on Sunday, Nov. 21, for a chance to move to the third round of the NCAA Championships. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.

1 | Even without scoring in the past two matches,
Trevor Amann still holds the most goals (16) and points (38) for the Mustangs and the Lone Star Conference. He also ranks seventh in the NCAA in both categories while his averages of 0.84 goals and 2.00 points rank tenth and ninth in DII. The senior adds six assists to the list. His 92 shot attempts leads the team and the LSC, averaging 4.84 per game to rank second in Division II. The forward owns 39 shots on goal and a 0.424 shot on goal percent. Amann and teammate
Mere Escobar tied with four game-winning goals each. The Westminster, Colo., native sits sixth and seventh in MSU's all-time record books with 167 career shots and 75 career shots on goal. In three years at MSU, Amann saw 50 appearances and over 3,200 minutes.
Paul Henschke leads the Broncos with 13 goals and 29 points, including one tally against Biola. The sophomore attempted 49 shots with 26 landing on goal. Henschke notched two game-winners in 19 starts and 1,335 minutes.
2 | Though the Mustangs were without
Julian Barajas for the Lone Star Conference tournament, the senior still holds the most assists for the team. He holds nine helpers (0.529 per game) to lead the LSC and rank 16th in the NCAA Division II. Barajas turned in two game-winning goals against Oklahoma Christian (10/02) and UT Tyler (10/20). The midfielder adds four goals for 17 total points.
Carlos Flores is second in the LSC behind Barajas with seven assists on the season. His average of 0.37 helpers per match is also second in the conference. Flores notched six goals to total a team third-highest 19 points and rank fourth in the Lone Star Conference. The midfielder also completed two game-winners against Westminster (9/16) and UT Permian Basin (11/03).
Christian Miramontes holds five assists to lead Cal Poly Pomona on the season. The sophomore adds a goal to total seven points. Miramontes owns seven shots with three shots on goal. The midfielder has 18 appearances to tally 928 minutes in 2021.

Marc-Antoine Huzen posted starts in all 19 matches for MSU. The goalkeeper leads the Lone Star Conference with 1,745 minutes and a 0.729 save percent, which ranks 87th in the NCAA. The senior is second in the conference with eight shutouts and eighth in DII while maintaining a 0.98 GAA. He adds a fifth-place spot in the LSC with 51 total saves. Huzen made a season-high five stops against Northeastern State (9/09) and Texas A&M International (10/23). He saw 179 shots with 21 coming from Oklahoma Christian (10/09). Jordan Aldama also started all 20 matches for CPP. The senior owns a 1.01 GAA and 56 saves on the season. Aldama has a 0.727 save percent against 192 shots. In a 13-4-3 record, the goalkeeper allowed 21 goals and collected nine shutouts.
4 | Both Midwestern State and Cal Poly Pomona had a handful of players picked for their respective all-conference teams. Amann was named Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and Forward of the Year while
James Doyle took home Newcomer of the Year and Midfielder of the Year. Huzen claimed Goalkeeper of the Year while head coach
Michael Meachum was Coach of the Year. Amann, Doyle, Huzen and
Mere Escobar notched First Team accolades. Barajas, Flores and
Rory O'Keeffe named to the Second Team while
Juan Galindo completed Third Team awards.
Nathan Toledo posted a spot on the LSC All-Freshman Team.
The California Collegiate Athletic Association tabbed Henschke as Newcomer of the Year. Henschke, Cesar Ruvalcaba and Eduardo Faria found a spot on the All-CCAA First Team. Aldama, Miramontes, Jerry Ramirez and Kraig Bonanken received honorable mention for their respective positions.
5 | MSU and CPP made it far in their conference tournaments last week. The Mustangs were crowned as Lone Star Conference champs after defeating St. Mary's in the semifinals and Lubbock Christian in the championship match. Midwestern State and LCU stood tied 0-0 after double overtime and MSU took the trophy after converting 5-4 on penalty kicks. This was their fifth time as LSC Champions. Cal Poly Pomona also made it past the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The team defeated Cal State San Bernardino 2-1 in overtime for the semifinal match. The Broncos fell to No. 6 Cal State LA by 1-3 in the CCAA championship match.
HEAD COACH MICHAEL MEACHUM is in the midst of his fourth season as head coach at Midwestern State and his 10th overall in Wichita Falls. He served the first seven years as top assistant for
Doug Elder. During that time, Meachum helped the Mustangs reach two NCAA Division II South Central Region finals and to the national quarterfinals. Meachum boasts a 55-11-5 record (.814) since taking the reins of the program prior to the 2018 season. He has led the Mustangs to the 2018 Heartland Conference title, the 2019 Lone Star Conference postseason tournament crown and to two NCAA Division II postseason appearances in 2018 and 2019. Prior to MSU, Meachum served as an assistant at NAIA Bethany College (Kan.) and Hastings (Neb.), at Division I Oral Roberts and Division II Northeastern State.
SERIES WITH THE BRONCOS
Midwestern State and Cal Poly Pomona have only faced off once before Sunday's match. The Nov. 18, 2017, match ended in a 2-2 tie after two overtimes with
Sebastian Venegas and Scott Doney each collecting goals. The Broncos pulled out the 6-5 win in penalty kicks to knock the Mustangs out of the NCAA Quarterfinals in Wichita Falls, Texas.
