ODESSA, Texas -- After posting back-to-back ties last week, Midwestern State (5-2-3, 2-0-3) looks ahead to taking the road and facing UT Permian Basin (1-10, 0-6). The Lone Star Conference match will kick-off on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. in Odessa, Texas.
 

FIVE STORY LINES

1 |  Randi Heaton strikes again for the Mustangs as she tallied her fourth goal of the year against Texas A&M International (10/09) and leads MSU in total goals. The midfielder has two game-winners in the team's overtime victories over East Central (9/18) and St. Mary's (10/02). Against the Tigers, Heaton notched her goal in the last 18 seconds to play while claiming the game-winner at StMU in the first four minutes of OT. The senior recorded her first goal in Midwestern State's 3-1 win over Regis (9/12). In her 713 minutes of play, Heaton has eight shots with seven landing on frame for a 0.875 shot on goal percent. The Westminster, Colo. native totaled five goals and one assist for 11 points in her career at Midwestern State. Heaton collected 28 shots and three game winners in almost 4,000 minutes on the pitch.

Yarely Orona leads UT Permian Basin with three notches for six points. The senior has accounted nine shots with four on target in eight starts.

2 |  Notching her first Lone Star Conference Player of the Week award, Taylor Camp continues to impress during her ten starts. The senior leads the Lone Star Conference with a 0.894 save percent, earning 17th in NCAA Division II. Her 59 total saves registers third in the conference and 27th in DII.  The Waxahachie, Texas native recorded a career-high ten stops against East Central (9/18) to help the Mustangs to a double overtime victory and notched nine saves in the next match against St. Edward's (9/25). In her 977 minutes, the goalkeeper tallied a LSC fourth highest 0.645 goals against average. This sits at 45th in the nation. In her career, Camp registered a 1.27 GAA and 99 saves in 127 shots faced. She also sits eighth in MSU's all-time record book with six career shutouts. Camp is tenth in the books with 99 career saves and eleventh with seven all-time wins.

Jenna McEnaney has ten starts in eleven matches for the Falcons. The sophomore recorded 42 goals against to average 4.03 per game. She has 68 saves in 216 shots faced while registering a 0.618 save percentage. On the 2021 season, McEnaney is 0-9.

3 |  Lexi Beck sits second on the list with two goals and two assists for the 2021 season. The freshman tops MSU with 32 attempts and 17 on frame while gaining six points on the year. She notched the game winning goal against Northwestern Oklahoma State (9/02) for her first collegiate points. Versus Eastern New Mexico (9/29), Beck went for a goal and added an assist. Her second helper of the year was on Kelly Cannistra's tally against Texas A&M International (10/09). In ten starts and 889 minutes, the midfielder owns a 0.531 shot on goal percent for the Mustangs.

Alexandra Sanchez follows Orona with five points on two goals and one helper. The freshman totaled eight shots with four landing on goal in seven starts.

4 |  Ten matches into the 18 game season, MSU has amounted 14 goals, overtaking their total (11) from the full 2020 season that had ten games. Midwestern State has collected their best record since the 2017 season. In their first nine matches, the Mustangs have played to five wins, two drops and three draws for a .650 winning percent. In 2017, the team went 11-8-1 overall and 6-2 in the first eight games for a 0.75 win percentage. That same year, MSU made it to the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference post-season tournament and went on to the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

5 |  Midwestern State is perfect when traveling to Odessa, Texas, winning five straight matches. The first came in 2001 when MSU beat down UTPB by 12 goals to none. Lynette Osborne notched a hat-trick while Chrissy Troia and Heather Mathews gained braces. The next W was in 2004 with a 4-0 defeat of the Falcons for the Mustangs. In the first match of the season, four MSU players found the back of the net. The next face-off was pushed to 2016 with Midwestern State's Adrianna Smith gaining the game-winner. In the 2017 3-0 victory, Destinee Williamson collected a goal and assist. Senna Garcia completed her third goal of the season in the 2018 defeat of UTPB. Kelly Cannistra and Emma Baley each registered helpers in the match.


HEAD COACH RYAN SPENCE begins his fourth season as head coach at his alma mater. In the 2020 season, he led the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. As a player, Spence helped the Mustangs dominate in his four years on the field. He earned All-American from 2008-11 and helped the team reach the Final Four in 2010. His center back prowess assisted in gaining 35 shutouts in his tenure. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, he gained his masters from MSU in 2014-15. From there, Spence moved on as assistant coach at Texas A&M International in 2016 and head coach at Eastern New Mexico in 2017 before coming back to Midwestern State in 2018.
 
SERIES WITH THE FALCONS
Blooming in 2001, the series between Midwestern State and UT Permian Basin has been semi-one sided for 20 years. MSU holds a 9-1-1 record over UTPB, going 6-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The first draw came in 2007 when neither team could find the back of the net. The Falcons found their first win in a 2-1 defeat of the Mustangs in Wichita Falls, Texas, on Oct. 19, 2018. In every other match, Midwestern State has been the victor, including the latest 3-0 W in 2019. When on the road, MSU is a perfect 5-0 against UTPB.
