ALL ABOARD WITH COACH LESLIE
Justin Leslie started his second season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's basketball program with a sweep of Cameron last weekend in Lawton. The Mustangs battled to an 8-21 mark in 2019-20 but closed the regular season by winning four out of five games to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. Prior to MSU, Leslie posted a 266-121 overall record (.687) at Azusa Pacific leading the Cougars to nine 20-win campaigns, two Pacific West Conference titles, seven postseason tournament appearance and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight showing in 2015. Overall, Leslie owns a 281-145 mark (.660) in 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach including a 15-24 record (.385) at MSU.
 
AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS
Midwestern State snapped a 15-game slide against teams ranked in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Top 25 with a 92-81 win over No. 9 St. Edward's on Jan. 2 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. It was the Mustangs' first win over a nationally ranked opponents since beating No. 11 West Texas A&M 84-78 on Jan. 5, 2017. MSU's last win against a Top 10-ranked opponent came against Tarleton State (66-63) on Jan. 13, 2016 -- also at Ligon Coliseum. Since, the Mustangs fell 112-105 to St. Edward's in overtime on Jan. 3 in Ligon Coliseum, then dropped an 81-80 battle Friday to No. 15 Dallas Baptist. Midwestern State is 40-73 all-time against teams ranked in the NABC Top 25 including a 15-38 mark against those ranked in the Top 10. The Mustangs face current 16th-ranked Lubbock Christian next week.
 
MUSTANGS TEAM NOTES
* Midwestern State received votes in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Division II poll. The Mustangs last received votes in the national poll on Nov. 29, 2016. MSU is one of six teams in the Lone Star Conference to receive mention in the rankings joining No. 6 West Texas A&M, No. 11 St. Edward's, No. 15 Dallas Baptist, No. 16 Lubbock Christian and No. 25 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
* Midwestern State opened the season with at least five consecutive wins for the first time since the 2011-12 squad rolled out to a 13-0 start. MSU's 7-3 record is the best mark through nine games since the 2015-16 squad was 9-1.
* Midwestern State extended its run of games with at least one 3-pointer to 564 games dating back to the 2001-02 season. The Mustangs matched a school record burying 19 3-pointers in a 93-70 win at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Jan. 9th in Belton. MSU connected at a 40.4-percent clip from beyond the arc on a school single-game record 47 attempts. The Mustangs also equaled a school record originally set against East Central (Okla.) during the 2008-09 season behind an individual record of 10 triples by All American Nolan Richardson.
* Midwestern State tops the Lone Star Conference and is fifth in all of NCAA Division II with 126 made 3-pointers this season. The Mustangs average 12.6 made triples per game which is nearly three more than their single-game program record of 10 per game set last season. The 12.6 made triples per game rank second in NCAA Division II behind Point Loma, which made 16 triples in its only game so far this season. The Mustangs are also attempting nearly five more 3-pointers per game (33.4) than last season's record pace of 28.6 3-point attempts per game.
* Midwestern State leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks 11th in NCAA Division II pulling down 14.4 offensive rebounds per game. The Mustangs have grabbed at least 14 offensive caroms in all but two games this season with a high of 21 in a season opening win at Cameron (12/11). Midwestern has turned the offensive rebounds into 128 second-chance points through 10 games -- 12.8 points a contest.
* Midwestern State ranks 11th in NCAA Division II and leads the LSC with a +8.5 rebound margin. The Mustangs have out-boarded opponents by a double-figure margin in five of nine games this season and out-rebounded the opposition in eight of 10 games this season.
 
MUSTANGS INDIVIDUAL NOTES
* Junior guard Derrick Ogechi leads the squad scoring 14.0 points per game. He scored in double figures in eight of 10 outings including a season-high of 21 at Mary Hardin-Baylor. He bagged five triples in a 19-point effort Friday night against Dallas Baptist. Ogechi is second in the LSC averaging 3.2 3-point makes per game and is seventh with a 40.0 3-point field goal percentage. He also ranks 11th in the league pulling down 6.7 boards per game with a pair of 10-plus rebound efforts.
* Sophomore guard Terrell Wilson continued his recent run of efficiency hitting 6-of-9 shots with two 3-points to finish with 14 points Friday night against Dallas Baptist. The performance came on the heels of a 22-point effort against UT Tyler going 8-for-13 effort with six triples. Wilson ranks seventh in the LSC with 4.0 assists per game, 14th at 1.7 steals and is 14th with 2.1 3-point makes a contest.
* Junior forward Luke Hamilton is third in the Lone Star Conference draining 3.1 3-pointers per game and is fourth in the league in 3-point shooting accuracy (43.7 percent). He ranks third on the team scoring 10.5 points per game and has knocked down at least two triples in all but one game this season.
* Junior forward Jermane Carter continues to get the job done on the offensive glass. He broke out with a season-high 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting with six rebounds, three assists and three steals Friday at Dallas Baptist. Carter has grabbed at least four offensive rebounds in six of his eight games this season leading the LSC and ranking ninth nationally pulling in 4.6 offensive boards per game. He leads the team and rates sixth in the league at 8.1 rebounds per game.
* Freshman guards Rommell Williams (10.3 ppg) and Pierre Sanders (10.1 ppg) give the Mustangs two more double-figure scoring options. Williams ranks seventh in the LSC with 43 free throw attempts, while Sanders is fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4) and 11th in assists per game (3.8).
 
ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
Dallas Baptist (8-1) climbed five spots to No. 15 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches' NCAA Division II Poll. The Patriots are led by reigning, two-time United States Basketball Writers' Division II Player of the Week Chandler Jacobs. The senior from Missouri City averages 22.6 points per game shooting 62.2 percent from the field and 51.9 percent from 3-point range (27-of-52). He has scored at least 20 points in seven of nine games this season. Freshman guard Ricky Lujan ranks ninth in the LSC in scoring at 18.9 points per game and leads the league in 3-point shooting accuracy at 51.8 percent (29-of-56). The Patriots are 5-0 at Burg Center this season and have won their last 10 at home. Blake Flickner owns a 273-172 record (.613) in his 15th season at the helm at DBU.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist meet for the 49th time on the hardwood Saturday afternoon at Burg Center. The Mustangs own a 27-21 lead in the series which dates back to the 1968-69 season. The teams met for the first time in 12 seasons last year with DBU claiming a 102-72 victory in Dallas before last night's battle at the Burg. Midwestern State is 9-14 all-time against the Patriots in games played in Dallas.
