DALLAS -- Midwestern State battles No. 15 Dallas Baptist in a Lone Star Conference crossover series Friday and Saturday at the Burg Center.
 
The Mustangs and Patriots tip off Friday at 5 p.m. before closing the series on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.

Attendance at the Burg Center is limited to 50-percent capacity.

ALL ABOARD WITH COACH LESLIE
Justin Leslie started his second season at the helm of the Midwestern State men's basketball program with a sweep of Cameron last weekend in Lawton. The Mustangs battled to an 8-21 mark in 2019-20 but closed the regular season by winning four out of five games to qualify for the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. Prior to MSU, Leslie posted a 266-121 overall record (.687) at Azusa Pacific leading the Cougars to nine 20-win campaigns, two Pacific West Conference titles, seven postseason tournament appearance and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight showing in 2015. Overall, Leslie owns a 281-144 mark (.661) in 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach including a 15-23 record (.395) at MSU.
 
MUSTANGS TEAM NOTES
* Midwestern State received votes in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Division II poll. The Mustangs last received votes in the national poll on Nov. 29, 2016. MSU is one of six teams in the Lone Star Conference to receive mention in the rankings joining No. 6 West Texas A&M, No. 11 St. Edward's, No. 15 Dallas Baptist, No. 16 Lubbock Christian and No. 25 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
* Midwestern State opened the season with at least five consecutive wins for the first time since the 2011-12 squad rolled out to a 13-0 start. MSU's 7-2 record is the best mark through nine games since the 2015-16 squad was 8-1.
* Midwestern State extended its run of games with at least one 3-pointer to 563 games dating back to the 2001-02 season. The Mustangs matched a school record burying 19 3-pointers in a 93-70 win at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Jan. 9th in Belton. MSU connected at a 40.4-percent clip from beyond the arc on a school single-game record 47 attempts. The Mustangs matched a school record originally set against East Central (Okla.) during the 2008-09 season behind an individual record of 10 triples by All American Nolan Richardson.
* Midwestern State tops the Lone Star Conference and is fifth in all of NCAA Division II with 115 made 3-pointers this season. The Mustangs average 12.8 made triples per game which is nearly three more than their single-game program record of 10 per game set last season. The 12.8 made triples per game rank second in NCAA Division II behind Point Loma, which made 16 triples in its only game so far this season. The Mustangs are also attempting more than five more 3-pointers per game (33.9) than last season's record pace of 28.6 3-point attempts per game.
* Midwestern State leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks 11th in NCAA Division II pulling down 15.1 offensive rebounds per game. The Mustangs have grabbed at least 14 offensive caroms in all but one game this season with a high of 21 in a season opening win at Cameron (12/11). Midwestern has turned the offensive rebounds into 122 second-chance points through nine games -- 13.6 points a contest.
* Midwestern State ranks 11th in NCAA Division II and leads the LSC with a +9.3 rebound margin. The Mustangs have out-boarded opponents by a double-figure margin in five of nine games this season and out-rebounded the opposition in eight of nine games this season.
 
MUSTANGS INDIVIDUAL NOTES
* Sophomore guard Terrell Wilson broke the 20-point barrier for the third time in the last four games with a 22-point performance with a career-best six triples Saturday against UT Tyler. The effort boosted his season scoring average to a team-best 13.6 points per game. Wilson ranks sixth in the LSC with 4.1 assists per game, eighth at 1.89 steals and is 14th with 2.11 3-point makes a contest.
* Junior guard Derrick Ogechi ranks second on the squad scoring 13.4 points per game. He scored in double figures in seven of nine outings including a season-high of 21 at Mary Hardin-Baylor. Ogechi is third in the LSC averaging three 3-point makes per game and is eighth with a 37.5 3-point field goal percentage. He also ranks ninth in the league pulling down 7.1 boards per game with a pair of 10-plus rebound efforts.
* Junior forward Luke Hamilton leads the Lone Star Conference draining 3.44 3-pointers per game and is fourth in the league in 3-point shooting accuracy (46.3 percent). He ranks third on the team scoring 11.4 points per game and has knocked down at least two triples in each game this season. He has taken just eight shots from inside the arc this season, while 31 of his 35 makes are from beyond the arc.
* Junior forward Jermane Carter continues to get the job done on the offensive glass. He delivered his fifth consecutive game with at least eight rebounds grabbing nine boards Saturday against UT Tyler. Carter has grabbed at least five offensive rebounds in four of his seven games this season leading the LSC and ranking ninth nationally pulling in 4.71 offensive boards per game. He leads the team and rates seventh in the league at 8.4 rebounds per game.
* Freshman guards Rommell Williams (10.7 ppg) and Pierre Sanders (10.2 ppg) give the Mustangs two more double-figure scoring options. Williams ranks fifth in the LSC with 43 free throw attempts, while Sanders is fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.47) and sixth in assists per game (4.1).
 
ABOUT THE PATRIOTS
Dallas Baptist (7-1) climbed five spots to No. 15 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches' NCAA Division II Poll. The Patriots are led by reigning, two-time United States Basketball Writers' Division II Player of the Week Chandler Jacobs. The senior from Missouri City averages 23.9 points per game shooting 63.6 percent from the field and 52.1 percent from 3-point range (25-of-48). He has scored at least 20 points in seven of eight games this season. Freshman guard Ricky Lujan ranks ninth in the LSC in scoring at 18.4 points per game and leads the league in 3-point shooting accuracy at 52.3 percent (23-of-44). The Patriots are 4-0 at Burg Center this season and have won their last nine at home. Blake Flickner owns a 272-172 record (.612) in his 15th season at the helm at DBU.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist meet for the 48th and 49th time on the hardwood Friday and Saturday at Burg Center. The Mustangs own a 27-20 lead in the series which dates back to the 1968-69 season. The teams met for the first time in 12 seasons last year with DBU claiming a 102-72 victory in Dallas. Midwestern State is 9-13 all-time against the Patriots in games played in Dallas.

Midwestern State takes on No. 16 Lubbock Christian in a Lone Star Conference West Division series. The Mustangs travel to Lubbock Wednesday night at 7:30, then the Chaps return to Wichita Falls Saturday at 5:30.
