Styles out as Midwestern State cross country and track coach

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Koby Styles is out after 13 seasons leading the Midwestern State cross country and track & field programs.

A search for an interim coach begins immediately, while a national survey to permanently fill the position commences following the cross country season.

The NCAA Division II Presidents Council cancelled all 2020 fall championships earlier this month due to the coronavirus pandemic, while the Lone Star Conference elected to allow cross country, golf and tennis programs to compete this fall.

The Mustangs will compete in four totals meets this fall culminating in the LSC Championship on Oct. 31 in San Angelo. The remainder of the slate is yet to be released.

Styles served 13 seasons as head coach of the cross country program leading the Mustangs to seven LSC titles and an NCAA Division II South Central Region championship in 2011.

MSU qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships on three occasions finishing 15th in 2008, 17th in 2010 and 11th in 2011. In all, the Mustangs claimed 28 meet victories under Styles direction.

The program boasted two All Americans including Katie Stepp (2008) and Brissia Montalvo (2011), while nine student-athletes garnered United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) recognition and 21 gained All-LSC honors over the past 13 seasons. Sydnee Cole (2009), Montalvo (2011) and Kayleigh Jarrett (2017) claimed individual league titles for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State tasted individual success since adding a women's track & field program in 2012 with Montalvo advancing to the outdoor nationals in the steeplechase, while Ashley Flores became the first to compete at the national level in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in the mile and 1,500-meter run, respectively.
