Strong start in doubles propels Mustangs to 7-0 win

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State rode a strong start in doubles play to a 7-0 win over Colorado Mesa on Friday morning at the MSU Tennis Center.

"We are doing a lot more things as a team the last two days," MSU Texas head coach Scott Linn said. "What we are working on in matches is showing up on the court and that is a great sign."

The Mustangs swept the doubles matches, then went a perfect 6-for-6 in singles play to notch their second straight win at the Wichita Falls Invitational.

In a lineup switch, Angel Palacios/Quentin Scharfenberg formed a duo at number three and cruised to a 6-2 win over Mitchell Steadman/Thiago Nejm. Brice Bradshaw/Alberto Diaz clinched the point at number two with a 6-2 win of their own. The Mustangs completed the doubles sweep when Alex Martinez Roca/Alexandre Crepy won at the top spot.

"Quentin (Scharfenberg) did a great job stepping in at a moment's notice," Linn said. "He hadn't played since the first match of the season. And Angel (Palacios) adjusted well to a new doubles partner."

Crepy opened singles play with a straight set win against Steven Howe, 6-3, 6-0. Straight set wins by Palacios and Martinez Roca at number one and number two handed the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

Diaz made it 4-0 with a super tiebreaker win at number three. After dropping the opening set 3-6 to Tyler Landen, Diaz rattled off 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) wins in the next two sets to complete the comeback.

"Alberto (Diaz) showed resiliency today," Linn said. "He showed the ability to bounce back after dropping the first set and that is great to see."

Bradshaw and Abhi Venkatchalam closed out the match with victories at number five and number six.
