WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State snapped a five-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over MSU Denver on Thursday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
"This was a great team effort," MSU Texas head coach
Scott Linn said. "This was our highest quality win of the season."
Following a 6-2 win by
Alex Martinez Roca/
Alexandre Crepy in number two doubles,
Angel Palacios/
Ben Westwick rallied to defeat Daniel Llorente/Mateo Besada at the top spot, 7-6 (7-5).
The Mustangs won four of the six singles matches to break the program's longest losing streak since the 2012 season.
"We learned some things about ourselves during this losing streak," Linn said. "One thing we learned is everyone has to be ready to play. We have had eight different guys start for us and numerous lineup combinations. We have made changes and the guys have kept moving forward."
Crepy opened singles play with a straight set win over Jack McDermott before Palacios, ranked 5th in the country, handed the Mustangs a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the top spot.
"Angel (Palacios) grabbed the momentum in his match and carried it," Linn said. "That's a really good sign."
Martinez Roca, ranked 43rd in the country, pushed the advantage to 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision at number two.
MSU Denver won two of the final three singles matches. Alejandro Martinez Morilla held off
Alberto Diaz at number three, 7-5, 6-4, and David Kijak handed
Abhi Venkatachalam a 6-2, 6-3 loss. Sandwiched between those matches was an epic battle on court number five where freshman
Brice Bradshaw defeated Jordi Ribera, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (13-11).
