WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Travis Massey combines shooting and ball handling skills with size and physicality. The 6-7, 220-pound forward will bring the mixture from Grandview High School after signing a Letter of Intent earlier this week to join the Mustangs for the 2020-21 season.
"When I first saw Travis play, I knew his game was a fit for our program at MSU Texas," Midwestern State coach
Justin Leslie said. "He has a rare combination of size and skill that we are always searching for in recruits. His ability to shoot with range and handle the ball will fit well within our offensive scheme. In addition, his strength and physicality are elements that will allow him to make a transition into the Lone Star Conference."
Massey joins a strong 2019-20 signing class which includes standing guards
Rommell Williams (Houston, Texas/Mayde Creek HS) and
Pierre Sanders (Hutto, Texas / Hutto HS).
Massey helped the Zebras to UIL postseason appearances in each of his four prep seasons including a run to the state semifinals as a sophomore in 2017-18. In the Class 3A round of four, Massey scored a game-high 20 points but Grandview fell to Bowie and future teammate
Daniel Mosley.
Massey closed his sophomore campaign averaging 13.9 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 63 percent from the field. He improved on his averages to earn all-region accolades as a junior in 2018-19 helping the Zebras to the regional quarterfinals sporting averages of 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game once again shooting 63 percent from the field.
The Future 150 two-star recruit led Grandview back to the regional quarterfinals finishing off a stellar senior campaign.
Massey also played defensive end on GHS' Class 3A state champion football squad last fall.
"Although Travis is a fantastic player with a bright future on the court, he is just as solid off the floor," Leslie said. "He is a wonderful young man of high character that will be a valuable addition to the MSU and Wichita Falls community."
