WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State coach
Justin Leslie announced the addition of Hutto High School standout Pierre Sanders Friday afternoon.
"Pierre is a fantastic addition to the MSU program," Leslie said. "He is a true point guard who possesses the intangibles necessary to make his teammates better. His court vision and decision making will allow him to thrive in our offensive system."
Sanders blossomed in his four seasons playing for coach Gant Carraway at Hutto. The 5-10 guard has the Hippos off to a 12-1 start this season pouring in 20.2 points per game to go along with strong averages of 6.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 5.5 steals per game.
The productive start comes on the heels of sensational junior campaign in 2018-19 as Sanders sported averages of 18.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game to earn Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-Region III-5A first-team honors and was the District 18-5A Defensive MVP.
"Defensively, he has the ability to put pressure on the ball and make life difficult for his opponents. But more importantly, he is a wonderful young man that will represent the MSU community well," Leslie said.
The Hippos closed his junior campaign with a 22-12 overall record while advancing to the UIL Texas State playoffs for the second consecutive.
A four-year varsity letter winner, Sanders also earned All-District 19-5A first-team honors as a sophomore in 2017-18 averaging 15.3 points, 4.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game.
He was an honorable mention all-district performer as a freshman.
Sanders also thrived on the club level competing for MSU Hall of Honor member Marquette Wilkins at Urban ASAK.
Sanders also earned four varsity football letters helping Hutto to four postseason appearances.
He joins Mayde Creek High standout guard Rommell Williams, who also signed in November.
