LAREDO, Texas -- Midwestern State overcame a rough opening round to fire the third lowest team score of the day during the second circuit Monday afternoon in the Jack Brown Memorial played at the par-72, 7,168-yard Max Mandel Municipal Golf Course.
"We have been practicing very well and I thought this was a course we go low on," MSU Texas coach
Jeff Ray said. "For whatever reason, this was a day we just didn't play to our potential."
The Mustangs recovered from a 15-over team total of 303 in the first round to notch the second lowest score of the second round with a 1-over 289.
MSU is seventh heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes with a 16-over 592 standing behind St. Edward's (577/+1), St. Mary's (578/+2), Rogers State (578/+2), Dallas Baptist (585/+9), UT Permian Basin (587/+11) and Texas A&M-Commerce (588/+12).
Sophomore
Garrett Leek rattled off four birdies during a five-hole stretch on the Front Nine after opening on the back side where he worked a clean card with two birdies. His 5-under 67 was the third lowest score of the day as the Brock, Texas native surged from a 5-over 76 in opening round to land in a tie for seventh with a 36-hole, 1-under total of 143.
Senior
Jake Doggett threatened to go low, but finished with the second most pars on opening day going with 25 to log scores of 73 and 72 for a 1-over total of 145 to tie for 12th.
"We struggled with our irons from 100 yards and in as a team," Ray said. "Jake was close with his placement but wasn't consistently at a distance to score many birdies."
Freshman
Kolton Baber (76-76) and junior
Keiton Hoster (78-74) tied for 35th through the first 36 holes with 8-over totals of 152, while junior
Conrad Rafferty stands 48th logging tallies of 79 and 78 for a 13-over 157.
St. Mary's senior Emilio Gonzalez (70-66) and Rogers State freshman Nico Horder (66-70) top the individual leader board with matching, 8-under totals of 136.
The final round of the Jack Brown Memorial begins with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
