LAWTON, Okla. -- Once Maighan Hedge got going there wasn't much Midwestern State could to slow her down.
The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia poured in 30 of her career-high 32 points in the second half, but it still wasn't enough.
The Mustangs' team approach was too much for a superior singular effort to overcome as MSU outlasted the Aggies 82-77 Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.
"She's just a tough player. (Cameron head coach) Emma (Andrews) probably challenged her," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "You think you have her stopped and then she does a step through. Hedge is quite a player. She's good for our league and she's only a sophomore. I saw her in warmup and I saw her only miss about four shots. I knew we were in for it."
In the end, though, Midwestern State senior forward
Elizabeth Cathcart provided the answer swatting Hedge's potential game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing second to allow the Mustangs to win their second straight game to even both the season and LSC marks at 7-7 and 5-5.
"I thought it would be quicker to sprint over the screen and it that worked out," Cathcart said. "They have some great shooters and you know that. You just have to punch back."
The Spring Branch native followed up a career-high effort earlier in the week against the Aggies by leading the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. Cathcart was one of five Mustangs to score in double figures.
Junior guard
Kityana Diaz continued her recent surge with 13 points, while senior
Mica Schneider notched her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
"The girls followed the game plan to a T," Johnson said. "When you're clicking on all cylinders like that, your defense is going to have more punch to it."
Sophomore forward
Shawnisay Millar finished a workman-like effort by scoring each of her 10 points from the charity stripe. She also grabbed seven rebounds as the Mustangs enjoyed a +14 edge on the glass.
Junior transfer
Kaki Simpson connected on a pair of treys to score a season-high 10 points of her own, while freshman
Eternity Jackson drilled a clutch triple in each half.
"Kaki came in and provided some scoring," Johnson said. "She's an intangible player. She's always going to be there in help and always going to be in position to rebound."
Midwestern State looks to continue the roll with a pair of Lone Star Conference games next week on the road. The Mustangs take on Oklahoma Christian on Thursday and Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday.
"Any time you can gain momentum with two games is huge," Johnson said. "We're still trying to figure out this league with the travel. I don't feel like I did a lot of coaching today. I just let them go out and play."
Cameron fell to 5-11 and 4-6.
