OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Oklahoma Christian Eagles turned in a near flawless second half performance from deep, hitting 9-of-12 attempts to run away from a shorthanded Midwestern State squad, 89-73, on Thursday night at the Payne Athletic Center.
Playing without
Courtney Kerr,
Erin Alexander, and
Hannah Reynolds, who all missed the game due to injury, Midwestern State watched OC shoot 11-of-17 from deep. The Eagles, who entered the night shooting just 28% from distance, drilled five straight three-pointers at one point during the second half.
"We were trying to pressure more, we were rotating, trying to make them drive more and then our rotations broke down on the back side," MSU Texas Head Coach
Noel Johnson said. "I am not real happy with our defense right now."
MSU whittled down a 12-point second quarter deficit to 42-37 at the break behind a 12-5 run.
Mica Schneider scored all 12 of her points in the second period. Reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Elizabeth Cathcart scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.
Haevyn Risley finished with 13 points, six rebounds, six assists, six steals, and two blocks.
The Mustangs return to the floor on Saturday afternoon against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
"The girls are disappointed," Johnson said. "We have to get our confidence back and keep plugging away and grinding."
The Mustangs dropped to 7-8 (5-6), while Oklahoma Christian improved to 6-10 (6-6).
Kendall Blackburn and Megan Shelton each scored 16 points for the Eagles.
