WACO, Texas -- The Texas Sports Hall of Fame (TSHOF) announced the induction of Midwestern State women's basketball coach
Noel Johnson into its 2019 Southwest Conference Hall of Fame class.
Johnson played a key role as the starting point guard for Hall of Fame coach Marsha Sharp's national championship team in 1993 at Texas Tech. It was the culmination of the Lady Raiders run of four consecutive Southwest Conference championships including four NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances.
She was a three-time All-Southwest Conference selection, earned 1994 SWC All-Tournament pick and was named to the All-Time Lady Raider SWC Team.
Johnson was named Team MVP in 1994 and was the first recipient of the Jeannine McHaney Athlete of the Year Award, selected by women's coaches at Texas Tech.
She remains the program's most accurate career 3-point shooter hitting 51.1 percent of her shots from beyond the arc during her collegiate career which spanned from 1991-95.
Johnson also gained enshrinement into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018 and was inducted into the 2005 Texas Tech Hall of Honor.
Johnson became the all-time leading in coaching wins during her 11-year run at Midwestern State leading the Mustangs to 151 victories.
Under her guidance, MSU Texas claimed a Lone Star Conference championship posting the program's most wins in the NCAA era with 26 during the 2012-13 season advancing to the South Central Region final.
Following the campaign, Johnson earned TABC Small College Coach of the Year just a season after gaining LSC Coach of the Year honors in 2012.
It was the first of three consecutive regional appearances for the Mustangs, who returned LSC Postseason Tournament championship game in 2015.
Johnson's mark on the Midwestern State women's basketball program is most proudly displayed in high graduation rates and success in the classroom. Each year, a great number of her former players return for alumni events.
A native of west Texas, Johnson hails from Kelton and was born in nearby Shamrock. An accomplished prep athlete, she earned two letters at Nazareth High School where she helped the Swiftettes to a pair of Texas Class A state championships.
Sponsored by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference (SWC) Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place at an 11 a.m. luncheon on Saturday, Aug. 31 on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock inside the City Bank Room in United Supermarkets Arena.
