TAMUK's Smith no-hits Mustangs

THE RUNDOWN
KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville's Breanna Smith came one strike shy of a perfect game in Friday's 5-0 win over Midwestern State at Hubert Field.

Junior outfielder Lauren Lindgren worked a two-out walk in the top of the seventh for the Mustangs' only baserunner before the Javelinas southpaw completed her second no-hitter of the season on a groundout to third.

MSU fell to 19-19 overall and 10-17 in Lone Star Conference play. The Maroon and Gold end the season on a 15-game road losing streak.

Smith became the first pitcher to hurl a seven inning no-hitter against the Mustangs in program history and joined Texas Woman's Brandi Lander (4/5/14) and Texas A&M-Commerce's Emily Otto (2/16/19) as the only pitchers to no-hit the Maroon and Gold in the team's 16-year history.

The San Antonio native needed only 87 pitches for her second no-no of the season (vs. St. Edward's, 2/5/19). She matched a season high with 10 strikeouts.

Senior Misty Muniz (9-11) was stuck with the loss, giving up four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings of work. Senior Abbie Lancaster came on in relief to start the fifth, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Joy Cervantes paced Kingsville at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Anastasia Leibas went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

The No. 3-ranked Javelinas broke the game open with a four-spot in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases with no outs, Victoria Schoonard-Saborio wore Muniz's first-pitch offering to bring home the game's first run. Leibas followed with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to push the advantage to 4-0.

The offense proved to be more than enough as Smith left the MSU Texas hitters baffled at the plate.

Kingsville added an insurance run in the fifth. Veronica Chavez drove a single through the left-side of the infield before Makenzie Mays followed with a single to right. A groundout allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Cervantes pushed the Javelinas lead to 5-0 with an RBI single up the middle.

Still without a base runner going into the top of the seventh, senior Tucker Caraway tried to beat out a bunt to lead off the inning while freshman Ashley Turner flew out to right for the second out.

Lindgren was issued three-straight balls to begin her at-bat before a called first strike and foul ball moved the count full. With a chance to make history, Smith missed down and away for ball four to give the Mustangs their first baserunner of the day.
