Doggett leads charge, Mustangs erase 15-stroke deficit to win St. Edward's Invitational

AUSTIN -- Midwestern State rallied from 15 strokes back to claim the team title in the Golf Glove Hub St. Edward's Invitational Tuesday at the North Course of the Onion Creek Country Club.

Sophomore Jake Doggett fired his collegiate low score of 64, while freshman Garrett Leek finished off his third consecutive par-or-better score with a 3-under 67 over the final 18 holes.

Senior Chance Craig carded a 1-over 71, while Clayton Meyers had a 4-over 74 to close out low team round of the tournament with 4-under 276.

"We finally put together the type of round this team is capable of," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "I don't think we've ever won a tournament where we've had to come back from so far."

The Mustangs recovered from a 12-stroke deficit t at the 2017 edition of the St. Edward's Invitational to with the exact 54-hole, 9-over total of 849. The total matches the fourth lowest three-round team total in program history.

Oklahoma Christian needed a birdie from Andres Brictson on the final hole to tie the Mustangs for top team honors. Brictson, a sophomore from Merida, Mexico, claimed the individual title carding scores of 73, 65 and 67 for a 5-under total of 67.

Doggett and Leek along with St. Mary's Jake Stevenson tied for second with matching 3-under totals of 207.

Doggett completed a phenomenal final round with six birdies and an eagle for the top individual round of the final round. His previous low of 67 came in the third round of the Midwestern State Invitational last fall.

"Jake had an exceptional ball striking day," Ray said. "He was aggressive in the right spots and played one of his best rounds."

Leek delivered his fourth Top 10 showing in seven collegiate tournaments and notched three par-or-better scores for the second time this season. He also finished third at West Texas A&M's Ryan Palmer Invitational and was seventh in the Midwestern State Invitational last fall before taking sixth last week at the Central Oklahoma Broncho Invitational.

He continued his exceptional play by piling up a tournament-high 14 birdies.

"Garrett was more up and down," Ray said. "As good as he was today, he would say probably two swing cost him three strokes. He had an exceptional tournament."

Craig grabbed his third Top 10 finish tying for seventh with a 1-over total of 211, while Meyers tied for 63rd with an 18-over total of 228 and sophomore Conrad Rafferty placed 68th with a 20-over total of 230.

Midwestern State competes in the Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate on April 8-9 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
