SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Angelo State continued its mastery over Midwestern State Saturday taking both ends of the doubleheader 14-8 and 13-2 in five innings to complete a sweep of the season series for the third straight year.
The Mustangs fell to 12-12 on the season and 5-10 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Rambelles moved to 22-9 and 9-6.
GAME 1: ANGELO STATE 14, MIDWESTERN STATE 8
Freshman
Ashley Turner rapped a pair of doubles and drove in a season-high five runs to pace Midwestern State in Saturday's opener before Angelo State used a six-run sixth inning to put the game away, 14-8.
Turner delivered a bases loaded, bases clearing double to the left-field gap to cap off a five-run fourth inning for the Mustangs to knot the game at 8-8. Turner's stroke followed the second of two doubles for junior
Lauren Lindgren, who chased in the other two MSU Texas runs in the frame.
But Angelo State answered with a big sixth inning ignited by a leadoff home run by junior Courtney Barnhill and three-run blast from junior Jade Strother to extend the lead to 14-8 heading into the final inning.
Turner pushed across the Mustangs' first two runs of the game on a double down the right-field line in the third just an inning after scoring the team's first run of the game courtesy of
Misty Muniz' single to right field.
Turner's first double temporarily staked the Mustangs to a 3-2 lead, but Angelo State sent 12 girls to the plate in a six-run third inning to take an 8-3 lead.
MSU Texas senior
Abbie Lancaster took the loss to fall to 6-4 allowing 11 runs -- nine earned -- on nine hits in four innings. She struggled with the strike zone finishing with eight walks while surrendering three doubles and a homer.
GAME 2: ANGELO STATE 13, MIDWESTERN STATE (5 INNINGS)
Angelo State's Jade Strother smashed a grand slam in the first inning as the Rambelles ran away with the series finale -- 13-2 -- Saturday afternoon at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles took advantage of seven walks and three hit batsman to score three runs in the second and six more in the third inning.
MSU Texas senior
Misty Muniz suffered her roughest start of the season allowing 13 runs -- all earned -- on eight hits including three doubles and a homer to fall to 5-6 on the season. The outing snaps a string of nine starts with at least seven strikeouts for the Seabrook, Texas native who didn't record a single punch out against the Rambelles.
Junior
Lauren Lindgren put the Mustangs on the board with a solo homer in the fourth inning -- her fifth of the year, while senior
Carli Woolsey launched her sixth homer over the left-field fence in the fifth.
