Muniz keeps Ks coming, but Mustangs drop series opener at Angelo State

THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Midwestern State's Misty Muniz kept the strikeouts coming at a record rate in the series opener against Angelo State Friday night at Mayer Field.

The senior from Seabrook recorded nine punch outs becoming the first Mustangs pitcher to record at least seven Ks in nine consecutive starts, but was unable to keep the Rambelles at bay in a 5-3 loss.

Angelo State leadoff hitter Courtney Barnhill launched a two-run homer over the left-field fence in the sixth inning to lift the Rambelles to 20-9 on the season while moving to 7-6 in Lone Star Conference.

Barnhill's team leading seventh homer wiped out a three-run rally in the fifth inning for the Mustangs which was keyed by sophomore shortstop Caycee Griffin's two-run double to the right-field gap to knot the game at 3-3.

Senior first baseman Carli Woolsey ignited the uprising with a one-out double to right field before the Mustangs loaded the bases after Muniz was hit by a pitch and freshman catcher Bailey Wamsley drew a walk.

Woolsey plated MSU Texas' first run on a wild pitch before Griffin delivered her fifth double of the campaign to tie the game.

Freshman Ashlyn Lerma staked Angelo State to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double down the right-field line, then the Rambelles tacked on another run in the third on Avery Zeigler's run-scoring triple down the left-field line.

Sophomore Meagan Hill earned the win in the circle to improve to 8-3. She allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Muniz fell to 5-5 allowing five runs on six hits.
