WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State overcame a slow start in doubles with a strong singles performance in a 5-2 win against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The 17
th-ranked Mustangs improved to 3-0 on the young season while the Savage Storm fall to 1-1.
The Mustangs dropped the doubles point for the first time this season despite a pair of fiery comeback bids at the Nos. 1 & 3 lines.
After the MSU Texas pair of
Angel Palacios and
Nolan McCaig dropped a 6-1 decision to Sandro Lena and Jason Roberts at the No. 2 flight.
Down multiple breaks on courts one and three, the Mustangs pulled within a game in each match before eventually succumbing. SEOSU's Ondrej Nice and Benjamin Finet held off
Dillon Pineda and
Ben Westwick, 6-4, at No. 1 seconds before
Denney Norrie and
Alex Martinez Roca were unable to force a tiebreaker at No. 3, 7-5.
Friday marked the first time in
Scott Linn's tenure the team dropped all three doubles matches and came back to win.
The Mustangs quickly swung the momentum in singles with first set wins on five of six courts.
Martinez Roca remained unbeaten, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Roberts at the No. 4 line to even the match, 1-1.
Moments later, Palacios rolled to a straight-sets win over Scoppetta, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 to give the Maroon and Gold a 2-1 edge.
Pineda triumphed over Lena, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 2 line to pull the Mustangs within a point of clinching the match, 3-1.
Newcomer
Alberto Diaz locked up the win for MSU Texas, blasting Finet, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 before Westwick capped off the victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vuckovic at No. 6.
