THE RUNDOWN
COMMERCE, Texas – A four-spot in the bottom of the fifth was all No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce needed in a 4-0 win over Midwestern State on Friday at John Cain Family Softball Field.
Senior
Misty Muniz matched a career-high with 6.0 innings and seven strikeouts and was masterful in the circle. The Seabrook native allowed four runs on four hits – all in the fifth – with four walks and seven punchouts only to be saddled with the loss. Muniz drops to 2-2 on the season.
TAMUC's Emily Otto earned the win, improving to 6-0. The southpaw pitched out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the top of the second and worked around back-to-back singles to start the fourth to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard.
Otto went the distance in a complete game shutout, scattering three hits and a walk while fanning five.
Chealsea Slider broke up Muniz's no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single to center. Ta'Lyn Moody followed with an infield single to third before Ciera Nunez beat out a single to the pitcher to load the bags. Kayla Kilcrease was hit by Muniz's first-pitch offering to break the scoring seal, 1-0.
After a strikeout and an infield fly, Muniz surrendered a bases-clearing double to Vanessa Muro to extend the Lions lead to 4-0. Muro was cut down at third for the third out of the frame.
The Mustangs went down in order in the sixth. Freshman catcher
Bailey Wamsley reached with one out in the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the contest.
Senior infielder
Carli Woolsey was the only player to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
