@MSUMustangs stymied by Lions' pitching in sweep

THE RUNDOWN
COMMERCE, Texas – Midwestern State was held scoreless for the second and third consecutive games as it suffered a pair of five-inning losses to No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at John Cain Family Field, 12-0 and 9-0.

GAME ONE
A pair of errors cost the Mustangs 11 runs in a 12-0 loss to the Lions in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Senior Abbie Lancaster (4-1) allowed nine hits and six walks over 4.0 innings. The right-hander was tagged for 12 runs of which only one was earned.

Katie Dean earned the win for the Lions, scattering five hits and four walks over five innings for the team's second-straight shutout over the Mustangs.

The Lions scored four unearned runs in the top of the first with timely two-out hitting.

Following a dropped fly ball to open the game, Lancaster loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks before striking out Bri Simms for the second out of the frame. Kinsie Hebler lined a two-run single down the right field line to stake TAMUC to an early 2-0 lead. Chealsea Slider followed with a two-run double through the left-side of the infield to extend the lead to 4-0.

Another miscue cost the Mustangs eight runs in the bottom of the third. Sims led off the inning with a single through the left-side before a fielder's choice erased Sims at second. Lancaster induced a popup for the second out when back-to-back singles from Slider and Kynslee Noriega loaded the bags.

Kayla Kilcrease was hit by Lancaster's 1-2 offering to extend the lead to 5-0 when another dropped fly ball cleared the bases. A walk and another HBP again loaded the bags before Sims hit a grand slam to left-center to cap the scoring at 12-0.

The Mustangs were held to five hits in the contest with a multi-hit performance from junior outfielder Lauren Lindgren, going 2-for-3.

GAME NOTES
- Midwestern State surrendered a season-high 12 runs, despite matching a season-low with one earned run allowed
- The Mustangs were shutout and held without an extra-base hit for the second-straight game
- MSU Texas moves to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play
- Senior Abbie Lancaster gave up a career-high 12 runs, of which only one was earned
- Junior Lauren Lindgren provided the lone multi-hit performance for the Mustangs, going 2-for-3

GAME TWO
TAMUC's Emily Otto tossed a five-inning no-hitter against the Mustangs in a 9-0 MSU Texas loss in the nightcap. The southpaw allowed two walks and completed the feat on 83 pitches to improve to 7-0.

Otto threw the first no-no against the Maroon and Gold since Texas Woman's Brandie Lander no-hit MSU Texas on April 5, 2014.

Caraway got the start in the circle, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and nine walks while striking out seven.

The Lions scratched across a run in the bottom of the first to break the scoring seal. Kilcrease lined a double to the right-center alley and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch allowed Kilcrease to cross the plate and stake TAMUC the early advantage.

Caraway settled in and kept the Lions off the scoreboard through the fourth inning, but the Mustangs' offense was unable to figure out Otto in the circle.

TAMUC broke the game open with an eight-run fifth to close out the contest. With two runners aboard an errant throw down the right field line scored three runs, 4-0. Back-to-back singles from Ciera Nunez and Kilcrease before a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases.

Jodie Hill was issued a walk to allow a run to score and Muro lifted a grand slam to left to close out the game.

GAME NOTES
- Texas A&M-Commerce's Emily Otto threw the first no-hitter against Midwestern State since Texas Woman's Brandie Lander accomplished the feat on April 5, 2014
- The Mustangs were shut out for the third consecutive game, running the scoreless streak to 17 innings
- Senior pitcher Tucker Caraway allowed a career-high in runs (9), earned runs (8), walks (9) and strikeouts (7)
- Otto allowed walks to seniors Carli Woolsey and Misty Muniz
