The Mustangs play a three-game set beginning on Friday at John Cain Family Softball Field in Commerce. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. in Saturday's doubleheader.
Storylines
Mark Ryal
Mark Ryal enters his third season as the head coach of the Maroon and Gold. The former Major Leaguer has led the Mustangs to a 41-52 (.441) record and a pair of ninth place finishes in the LSC.
Hot Starts
The Mustangs opened the season with a 7-2 start for the second-straight season under
Mark Ryal. Last year, the Maroon and Gold began 8-2.
Four players are hitting better than .300, including outfielders
Lauren Lindgren and
Kelsey Eropkin at .483 and .433, respectively. Senior
Misty Muniz and sophomore
Caycee Griffin are both over the .300 mark with a combined seven homers and 18 RBI.
Road Warriors
MSU Texas went 10-7 on the road in 2018, winning four of its last five, while beginning this season 1-0 with a 4-2 win against Lubbock Christian and Plainscapital Park.
Beating the Best
After facing four teams ranked in the NFCA Top-25 a season ago, the Mustangs square off with their first nationally ranked opponent of 2019 in the ninth ranked Lions. MSU Texas took the first game of the series, 5-4, last season before dropping the final two matchups.
Lindgren Picks Up Hit No. 100
Junior outfielder
Lauren Lindgren recorded her 100
th career hit in the top of the sixth in Saturday's win over Missouri Southern. The Denton product drove a one-out RBI single back up the middle to score Eropkin and stretch the Mustangs lead to 4-1.
In three seasons with the Maroon and Gold, Lindgren ranks 12
th all-time with a .339 career average, eighth with a .549 slugging percentage and 14
th with a .395 career OBP.
Woolsey Drops Bombs
Senior infielder
Carli Woolsey connected on her fourth home run in the first nine games on Tuesday against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Of her eight hits this season, four have left the yard and is two away from matching a career-high.
All She Does Is Hit
Junior outfielder
Kelsey Eropkin has picked up where she left off a season ago – logging hit after hit after hit. The Tulsa native has a pair of three-hit performances this season and has plated four runs in the last three games. Eropkin has logged hits in eight of nine games this season to go along with a .433 average.
No Sophomore Slump
Sophomore shortstop
Caycee Griffin is tied for the team lead with four home runs. After hitting .234 as a freshman, the Healdton, Okla., native has broken out, hitting .320 with nine runs and 10 RBI and is slugging nearly .500 points better, going from .360 to .840.
Lancaster Keeps Winning
Senior
Abbie Lancaster has racked up four wins already in the 2019 campaign, ranking third in the Lone Star Conference with a perfect 4-0 mark. After setting the MSU Texas single-season save record in 2018, Lancaster is one win away from matching her 2018 output.
LSC Poll
MSU Texas was projected to finish seventh in the Lone Star Conference preseason poll. The Mustangs received 120 points to tie with Texas Woman's.
