WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It was a Cinematic Homecoming Saturday night and Midwestern State made sure there were plenty of highlights to show on Memorial Stadium's big screen.
Sophomore
Triston Williams directed the Mustangs' showtime offense to a 606-yard performance, but proved mostly effective producing mini-features in a 70-35 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
He passed for career-high 354 yards and matched a school record with six touchdown passes moving the Mustangs to scores in three plays or less in eight of 10 scoring drives.
MSU improved to 15-3 in Homecoming games under
Bill Maskill and scored 70 points for the fourth time in the series including a 73-6 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2005, a 70-29 victory over Abilene Christian in 2011 and a 76-21 beating of UT Permian Basin in 2016.
Williams connected with four different receivers for touchdowns including two to
Kylan Harrison (40, 24), two to
Tyrique Edwards (26, 5) and once to
Xavier Land (64) and
Lazarus Fisher (29).
The Mustangs rushing attack took hold in the second half racing for scores on a 75-yard burst by Fisher in the third quarter followed by a 59-yard scamper by
Justin Jones later in the stanza.
Midwestern struck for the first four scores of the game to break out to a 28-0 lead and led 35-14 at the half. The Mustangs scored 28 more in the third quarter to put away the Javelinas.
The Mustangs improved to 4-3 on the season snapping a three-game slide with the dominating victory. Ironically, MSU snapped its last three-game losing streak with a win over the Javelinas in 2005 and also cracked a four-game slide with a victory over TAMUK in 1997.
Harrison caught three passes for a team-high 119 yards, while Land also went over the century mark finishing with 104 yards on four catches.
Jones paced Midwestern's rushing attack with 88 yards on eight carries, while Fisher need just four carries for 85 yards.
Deven Smith led the defense with nine tackles with a 2.5 stops for loss, while senior
Tristan Shearman made two of the Mustangs' five sacks while
A'quan Randolph,
Zed Asowata,
Terrell McLain and
Michael McDonald were also in on sacks.
Midwestern State takes on Western Oregon Saturday night at McArthur Field in Monmouth, Ore. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (Central Time).
