COMMERCE, Texas -- Midwestern State wasn't on the right side of history Saturday night in a 54-28 loss at Memorial Stadium.
The Mustangs are the midst of their first three-game skid since falling to Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Tarleton State in succession during the 2005 campaign before snapping the streak with an impressive 41-14 win over No. 6 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Midwestern State receives the opportunity when the Javelinas come calling for a Homecoming showdown next Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
"We got our butts kicked. That is obvious," Midwestern State
Bill Maskill said. "We were hot and cold on offense, then couldn't stop their running game. I think we kept fighting. We have a bunch of guys beat up, so this is critical week for us to get healthy. We just don't have the firepower right now."
The Mustangs conceded the most points in a regular season game during the
Bill Maskill era and the most since losing 55-16 to Northwest Missouri State in the 1998 season opener.
Still, Midwestern produced opportunities, but only scored on two of their four trips to the red zone turning the ball over on downs in the first quarter and having interception in the end zone at the close of the first half.
Texas A&M-Commerce tilted the field with long returns by Dominque Ramsey, who returned a 65 yards to open the game, then posted a pair of punt returns for 31 and 19 yards.
Ramsey also accounted for both of the Lions' interceptions.
Sophomore quarterback Miklo Smalls accounted for five touchdown passes to pace the Texas A&M-Commerce offense, while Antonio Lealiiee ran for 169 yards on 18 carries as the Lions amassed 499 yards of total offense.
MSU Texas sophomore signal caller
Triston Williams threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start including scoring strikes to
Lazarus Fisher (3),
Xavier Land (34) and
Kylan Harrison (57).
Senior
Quinton Childs paced the rushing attack with 68 yards on 17 carries, while Fisher added 37 yards on seven totes.
Redshirt-freshman linebacker
Justin Guillory finished with a team-high 10 tackles including 2.5 stops for loss. Both are season highs.
Midwestern State dropped to 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference play, while Texas A&M-Commerce improved to 5-1 and 3-0.
