No. 7 @MWSUFootball rolls past UT Permian Basin, 43-21

ODESSA, Texas -- Redshirt-freshman receiver Anthony Tennison's over-the-shoulder catch for a 41-yard touchdown as time expired sparked No. 7 Midwestern State to a 43-21 win over UT Permian Basin Saturday night at Ratliff Stadium.

The Mesquite, Texas native snagged a tipped pass for an 8-yard score earlier in the quarter, then closed out his ledger with a 14-yard slant for a touchdown to finish with three catches -- all for touchdowns and 63 yards.

It was enough to push the Mustangs' attack to 564 yards paced by a big three of Layton Rabb (291 yards, 3 touchdowns), Vincent Johnson (195 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Juwan Johnson (8 receptions, 132 yards).

Midwestern overcame a slugglish start as it came without a point in its first two trips in the red zone allowing the UT Permian Basin to strike first on an 8-yard scoring run by Marquise Simmons early in the second quarter.

Rabb found Tennison in the middle of the end zone with 6:40 to play in the first half to tie the game before the two connected at the end of a 2-minute drill on a fourth-down play for 41 yards at the horn to give MSU Texas the lead.

The Mustangs found paydirt three times in the third quarter as Vincent Johnson capped off a 6-play, 46-yard drive with a 1-yard run at the 11:21 mark, then dashed 82 yards on the Mustangs' next possession for his second score of the night to push the lead to 36-14.

Rabb closed the scoring with a 10-yard keeper with 4:24 to play.

Sophomore Michael Nash led the sack parade on defense with two solo jobs, while Paul Manus, Rigoberto Carrillo, Zach Edwards and Anthony Fields each added sacks.

Junior Jaydon Cunigan and senior Sir'Vell Ford each intercepted a pass for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-0 for the fifth straight year.

Midwestern State takes on Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference game Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
