MUSTANGS NOTES
 
FIRST SERVE: Midwestern State makes its eighth appearance at the NCAA II Championships in the Round of 16, clashing with No. 17-ranked Bluefield State (W. Va.) on Wednesday, May 9, at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. The Mustangs (21-5) and Big Blues (16-2) clash for the first time at 2 p.m. with a trip to the national quarterfinals on the line.
 
MSU advanced to the championships with a 5-1 win over Metro State as the South Central Region's top seed while BSC swept Fairmont State for a berth in the Round of 16.
 
The winner advances to the quarterfinals, taking on the winner of No. 2 seed Columbus State and Southwest Baptist on Thursday at 11 a.m.

MUSTANGS IN THE POSTSEASON: The Mustangs make their eighth appearance at nationals and fourth time in the last six seasons under Coach Scott Linn. MSU advanced to the quarterfinal round in 2006, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
 
FOUR RECEIVE ITA REGIONAL AWARDS: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its regional award winners on Wednesday with the Mustangs bringing home four honors. Scott Linn was named the South Central Region's Coach of the Year, junior Dillon Pineda received the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award while senior Vasudev Vijayaraman earned the ITA Most Improved Senior Award. As a team, MSU garnered the ITA Community Service Award for its contributions in the Wichita Falls community.
 
DOMINATING DOUBLES: The Mustangs have been dominant in doubles all season. Of the 26 matches played, MSU has picked up at least two wins in 21 matches, including sweeping the doubles competition on nine occasions. The tandem of Alex Martinez Roca and Angel Palacios lead the squad with a 20-3 record at the No. 3 line.
 
VICTORIOUS VAS: Senior Vasudev Vijayaraman has posted a 16-9 record on the season, all at the No. 1 flight. The Chennai, India, native leads the team with seven wins on the year against nationally-ranked foes.
 
GUARDIAN ANGEL: Sophomore Angel Palacios posted the second-longest winning streak in program history, winning 15-straight from Feb. 16-March 30. Over that stretch, the sophomore was only pushed to three sets twice before suffering his first D2 loss of the season. Between singles and doubles, Palacios owns a combined 41-8 record on the season while his career .708 winning percentage in singles ranks eighth all-time.
 
FRESHMAN TRIO: Freshman Alex Martinez Roca (20-4), Nolan McCaig (16-6) and Jean Muniz (16-5) combine for 52 wins at the Nos. 4-6 flights. Primarily playing No. 4, McCaig owns a 10-5 record at No. 4 while Muniz sits at 9-1 at No. 5. Roca has built a perfect 9-0 mark at No. 6.
