DALLAS – The MSU Mustangs went back-and-forth on Sunday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Center in an exhibition matchup in Dallas.
The Mustangs claimed three first-set singles wins but were unable to complete the match as MSU was unable to keep SMU from getting to four wins.
The Mustangs were unable to claim the doubles point against SMU but did put up a noble fight. MSU's No. 1 line tandem of
Vasudev Vijayaraman and
Jean Muniz fell to Jan-Simon Vrbsky and Tomas Vaise, 6-2. The duo of
Denney Norrie and
Alex Martinez Roca were unable to break serve late at the No. 3, losing to Gardiner Perotti and Aladio Fabregas, 6-4. The Mustangs pair of
Dillon Pineda and
Nolan McCaig ended the match with Charles Nettlefold and Roberto Rosales in a 4-4 draw after the point was decided.
In singles, the Ponies stretched the lead to 2-0 when Vaise defeated McCaig, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 line. Vijayaraman made a strong push late at the No. 1 position, but Vrbsky managed to hold on and extend the advantage to 3-0 for SMU with a 6-1, 7-5 win. SMU clinched the match several minutes later when Rosales knocked of Martinez Roca, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
Sundaram narrowly missed a victory for the Mustangs after taking the first set against Nettlefold. The contest went unfinished at the No. 2 line in favor of Sundaram, 6-3, 5-6. Palacios rolled to a first set win over Fabregas, 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-2. The No. 4 court was uncompleted in the third set, tied at one. Muniz claimed a tiebreaker over Rory Samuels at the No. 6 line and led 1-0 in the second set.
