WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
PLAYING ONE FOR FUN: MSU Texas concludes the 2017-18 regular season on Saturday against Texas Woman's at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton. A win by Midwestern State guarantees the Mustangs will finish better than .500 for the first time since the 2014-15 squad went 23-7 and advanced to the South Central Quarterfinals. The Maroon and Gold beat the Pioneers, 79-65, in the first meeting this season at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Senior forward
Micheline Mercelita grabbed a season-high 20 rebounds while senior guards
Kristin Rydell and
Whitney Taylor combined for 33 points on 14-of-24 shooting.
STANDINGS SHAKEDOWN: After the loss by the Mustangs on Tuesday, paired with the Cameron win over TWU on Thursday, MSU has locked up the No. 7 seed for the Lone Star Conference Tournament at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco. The Maroon and Gold will face either Angelo State or West Texas A&M on March 1 at 2:30 in Frisco. ASU and WT sit atop the LSC standings with identical 15-4 records.
- If Angelo State defeats Western New Mexico on Saturday, MSU would face the Lady Buffs in the opening round.
- If West Texas A&M defeats Tarleton State AND Angelo State loses to Western New Mexico on Saturday, MSU would face the Rambelles in the opening round.
THE RAINMAKER: Senior guard
Whitney Taylor etched her name atop the all-time three point list on Tuesday, recording her 154
th and 155
th made treys, passing former teammate Lisa Hampton for the top spot. The Melissa native went 2-for-5 from long range and finished with eight points in her historic performance.
T-DUB NOT GETTING HOME DUBS: Texas Woman's enters the matchup with a 10-15 overall record and a 7-12 mark in LSC play. More recently, TWU has been unable to protect its home court, going 2-6 in its last eight games at Kitty Magee Arena. MSU has earned wins every other year at TWU, dating back to the 2012 season, earning victories in odd-numbered years.
NEZIANYA POWERS PIONEERS: Senior forward Alexis Nezianya leads the Pioneers and ranks 14
th in the LSC, averaging 11.7 points per game. The Carrollton product is dominant on the glass, pulling down 8.7 rebounds a night.
