Scouting the Lady Buffs: Coming in at No. 5 in the most recent WBCA poll, West Texas A&M sits at a perfect 6-0 entering the first weekend of league action…WT averages a 22.7 point margin of victory this season and has won five of six games by double-figures, including four wins of at least 21 points…the Lady Buffs own the nation's best shooting offense, shooting 53.9 percent from the field and a LSC leading 84.2 PPG…seven different players average better than 5.0 points per game, led by senior forward Tyesha Taylor at 17.8 PPG…junior guard Megan Gamble ranks fourth nationally with 7.3 assists per game
 
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State tips off Lone Star Conference play this weekend on the road, making trips to Eastern New Mexico and fifth-ranked West Texas A&M to begin league action. The Mustangs meet the Greyhounds on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (Central) before facing off with the fifth-ranked Lady Buffs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
Storylines
Year 11 of Noel Johnson Era
The Noel Johnson era enters its 11th season in 2018-19 after becoming the winningest coach in program history on Dec. 19, 2017 in a 72-66 win at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
Overall, the Mustangs have posted a 140-141 (.498) record under Johnson's guidance with three-straight NCAA Division II South Central Regional berths from 2013-15 and a regional title game appearance during a historic run in 2012-13.
 
Sultans of Swat
MSU Texas leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks 16th nationally with 5.3 blocks per game. Defensively, the Maroon and Gold are holding opponents to 35.9 percent shooting from the floor this season.
 
Balanced Offense
The Mustangs 45.9 shooting percentage ranks as the second-highest in the LSC behind only West Texas A&M's 53.9 percent clip. Four players are averaging at least 10 points per game (Liz Cathcart – 11.5; Hannah Reynolds – 11.3; Annette Dukes – 10.3; Chelcie Kizart – 10.0) while four more average better than five points per game (Kityana Diaz – 9.3; Erin Alexander – 8.7; Mica Schneider – 7.3; Courtney Kerr – 6.8).
 
Record Breaking Night
The Mustangs 118-38 win over Dallas Christian matched the largest margin of victory in school history while the 118 points were the second most in program history. All nine players that saw the court scored in double figures as the Maroon and Gold shot 56.9 percent from the field, the ninth-best in MSU Texas history.
 
Charity Work
MSU Texas has made the most of its trips to the charity stripe this season, converting on 76-of-98 free throws (77.6 percent) to rank 28th nationally and second in the LSC. The Mustangs went 38-of-51 from the line in the win over Dallas Christian, the third most makes and fifth most attempts in program history. In the season-opener, MSU Texas went 22-of-24 (91.7 percent) from the line in the loss to Oklahoma Christian, turning in the 14th best free throw shooting performance in school history.
 
Liz Cathcart
Junior forward Liz Cathcart leads the team with 11.5 points per game this season after earning a spot in the starting rotation in the Ashbrook Classic. The Spring Branch native averages 16.0 PPG, 3.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in her two starts. She scored 18 points on 72.7 percent shooting against Texas Wesleyan and followed that up with a 14 point outing in the win over Dallas Christian.
 
Hannah Reynolds
Sophomore center Hannah Reynolds has flirted with a double-double in all four contests this season. The sophomore scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the season opener against Oklahoma Christian before following up with a 10 point, seven rebound night against Newman. The Prosper product added nine points and 11 rebounds against Texas Wesleyan and 13 points and four boards in the win over Dallas Christian. Reynolds has recorded a block in seven-straight games dating back to last season while her 42 career rejections ranks 14th in MSU Texas history.
 
Annette Dukes
After missing out on the 2017-18 season due to injury, junior forward Annette Dukes had a coming out party in the Mustangs win over Dallas Christian. The Miami, Fla., native went for 17 points and 10 rebounds, her first career double-double, while shooting 77.8 percent from the floor on 7-of-9 shooting. Previously, she dropped eight points and two boards in 13 minutes against Texas Wesleyan.
 
Chelcie Kizart
Senior guard Chelcie Kizart scored a career-high 17 against the Crusaders, shooting 62.5 percent from the field while going 4-for-5 from 3-point land. The St. Paul, Minn., native scored 15 points with eight rebounds in the season opener against Oklahoma Christian.
 
Kityana Diaz
Sophomore guard Kityana Diaz has shot better than 40.0 percent from the floor in each of her last three contests, averaging 10.7 points per game during that stretch. After a 12 point, three board performance against Newman, the Amarillo native dropped a 14 point, five rebound, four assist outing in the win over Dallas Christian. Diaz went 8-of-11 from the free throw line on her career night.
 
Erin Alexander
Junior forward Erin Alexander produced her first career double-double in the Maroon and Gold, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 25 minutes against Dallas Christian. On the season, the Washington, Kan., native averages 8.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
 
Courtney Kerr
Junior guard Courtney Kerr made her first career start in the Mustangs win over Dallas Christian. The Paradise native has shot better than 50.0 percent in three of four games this season, including a 5-of-7 performance for 12 points against Newman.
 
Anni Scholl
Senior guard Anni Scholl scored a career-best 11 in the win over Dallas Christian, going 3-for-5 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The Henrietta product grabbed five rebounds, coming one shy of a career-best.
 
Haevyn Risley
Freshman Haevyn Risley scored two points in each game of the Heartland/Lone Star Conference Challenge on Nov. 9-10. The Canadian, Texas, native pulled down three rebounds against Oklahoma Christian. Risley did not see action in the Ashbrook Classic.
