THE RUNDOWN
CANYON, Texas – A six-run seventh inning lifted No. 12 West Texas A&M to a series sweep of Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at Schaeffer Park with the Lady Buffs scoring the winning run on a throwing error in the infield to rally from a five-run deficit in the final frame for a 9-8 victory.
West Texas A&M (26-6, 11-4 LSC) began the comeback with one out in the seventh with back-to-back singles for Alyx Cordell and Shea Ibrahim leading to Kourtney Coveney's second home run of the game to pull the Lady Buffs to within two at 8-6. A double for Ashley Hardin and a walk for Allie Smith led to a RBI single for Kylee Moore to make the score 8-7. Maddie Green's sacrifice fly to left field plated the tying run before Moore came home to score on a throwing error at shortstop for a 9-8 win.
An eight-run fifth inning propelled Midwestern State (14-20, 5-13 LSC) in front at 8-3 in the fifth. The Mustangs limited the Lady Buffs to just one hit in the fifth and sixth innings before they struck for their six runs in the seventh.
Lauren Lindgren and
Taylor Bermudes sparked the Midwestern State (14-20, 5-13 LSC) offense in the fifth with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before a pair of errors by the Lady Buffs in the infield allowed the Mustangs to plate their first run of the game. A bases loaded walk for
Kelsey Knox with one out cut the West Texas A&M (25-7, 10-5 LSC) to 3-2 leading up to a
Kelcee Thompson single to left to even the contest at 3-3.
With two outs,
Amanda Thomas drew a bases loaded walk to move MSU in front at 4-3. A passed ball on a strikeout allowed Lindgren to reach first base and keep the inning going for the Mustangs. The error by the WT catcher proved to be costly as Bermudes followed with a bases-clearing triple to right center field to give Midwestern an 8-3 lead.
WT went on the board in the bottom of the first with the Lady Buffs putting runners in scoring position following a walk, single and passed ball. A groundout to second scored the first run of the game before a single through the right side for Moore extended the WT lead to 2-0.
A leadoff solo shot to right field by Coveney in the third gave the Lady Buffs a 3-0 lead with the first home run by either team in the series.
