Mustangs claim series win over Western New Mexico with Friday sweep

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State secured its third Lone Star Conference series win of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Western New Mexico Friday evening at Mustangs Park.

GAME 1 RECAP
Erin Knox recorded a career-high eight strikeouts and went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored to carry Midwestern State to an 8-3 win over Western New Mexico in the series opener
 
Knox lifted Midwestern (15-20, 6-13 LSC) to a 1-0 advantage in the first inning with a solo home run over the left field fence for her third bomb of the season.
 
Western New Mexico (1-32, 0-16 LSC) evened up the contest in the third on two hits and two errors with WNMU plating its first run of the game on an infield error for a 1-1 score.
 
In the bottom half of the third, Taylor Bermudes propelled MSU back in front with an RBI single to center field to bring in Misty Muniz for a 2-1 lead.
 
Midwestern plated six runs on three hits and two errors in the fourth inning with Taylor Mordecai launching the second homer of the game with a solo shot to left field for a 3-1 advantage. After three-straight walks, Lauren Lindgren drove in the second run of the inning with a single to left before a Bermudes single stretched the lead to 6-1 with two runs coming across. A sacrifice fly for Knox and an infield error by WNMU capped off the frame for MSU with two additional runs coming home for an 8-1 advantage.
 
WNMU added runs in the fifth and six innings with Ariana Maldonado recording an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI groundout by Mariangela Garcia following back-to-back singles for WNMU in the sixth for an 8-3 final.

GAME 1 NOTES
- Midwestern State overcame a season-high six errors with Erin Knox going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Taylor Bermudes went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run
- Knox earned the win in the circle with eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and one earned run

GAME 2 RECAP
A three-run home run by Misty Muniz in the fifth inning broke open a tied game to lift Midwestern State to a series win with a 6-2 victory in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
 
Midwestern State (16-20, 7-13 LSC) struck early with a pair of runs in the first with Kelsey Knox driving in two with a single up the middle after walks for Bermudes and Erin Knox.
 
In the second inning, Western New Mexico (1-33, 0-17 LSC) knotted it up at 2-2 following two MSU errors and an RBI single by Brooklyn Misenhimer.
 
A leadoff walk for Erin Knox and single for Kelsey Knox led to a two-out homer to left field for Muniz in the fifth with her fourth long ball of the season propelling MSU to a 5-2 advantage.
 
A single up the middle for Mordecai plated Bermudes in the sixth after her one-out double for a 6-2 Midwestern lead. WNMU was limited to just one walk in the final two innings with MSU earning the Friday sweep.

GAME 2 NOTES
Kelsey Knox tied a career-high three hits with two RBI and a run scored while Misty Muniz went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead MSU
- Peyton Helton tossed a two-hitter while allowing no earned runs with four strikeouts to earn the win in the circle

2 – Peyton Helton held Western New Mexico to just two singles in game two of Friday's doubleheader
