No. 12 Lady Buffs earn series win over Mustangs with Saturday sweep

THE RUNDOWN
CANYON, Texas – No. 12 West Texas A&M rallied for a 3-1 victory in the series opener before powering its way to an 8-0 run rule in six innings over Midwestern State to take the season series Saturday afternoon at Schaeffer Park.

GAME 1 RECAP
West Texas A&M erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run frame to pull ahead and take the series opener over Midwestern State.
 
The Mustangs (14-18, 5-11 LSC) grabbed an early lead in the third with a double by Erin Knox plating Lauren Lindgren for a 1-0 advantage.
 
West Texas A&M (24-6, 9-4 LSC) struck for all three of its runs in the fourth. Shayne Starkey evened up the contest with an RBI single to left center field to drive in Kylee Moore who led off the inning with a double. A single for Alyx Cordell and steals for both WT base runners put runners in scoring position for the Lady Buffs before a groundout scored the go-ahead run with two outs. Kourtney Coveney capped off the inning with an RBI double to left center to propel WT to a 3-1 advantage.
 
The Mustangs threatened in the seventh with a pair of walks and a single by Taylor Bermudes but a double play and a fly out to center earned the Lady Buffs the series-opening victory.

GAME 1 NOTES
Erin Knox went 2-for-4 with one RBI while Amanda Thomas finished 2-for-3
- Knox suffered the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits, three runs and three walks while tallying four strikeouts
- Kourtney Coveney and Allie Smith each totaled two hits to lead the Lady Buffs
- Kilee Halbert recorded the win for WT, giving up six hits, four walks and one run while fanning two batters

GAME 2 RECAP
West Texas A&M scored runs in the final four innings including a three-run sixth to earn an 8-0 run rule of Midwestern State in six innings in Saturday's nightcap.
 
After two scoreless innings, West Texas A&M (25-6, 10-4 LSC) plated two runs in the third. Coveney led off the frame with a triple to right center before Ashley Hardin drove her in on a single to right center. Smith followed with another hit to right center with a double to stretch the lead to 2-0.
 
Shea Ibrahim pushed the WT lead to 3-0 in the fourth, leading off with a double to center before stealing third and scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field by Coveney.
 
The Lady Buffs added two runs in the fifth, scoring on a sac bunt by Cordell and an Ibrahim double for a 5-0 advantage.
 
The run rule came into effect in the sixth with the Lady Buffs totaling four hits in the frame. With the bases loaded, a two-out single down the right field line for Sierra Gentry scored a pair of runs for WT before a single to left center by Ibrahim ended the game.
 
Midwestern State (14-19, 5-12 LSC) recorded three of its six hits in the second inning, loading the bases following singles by Kelsey Knox, Kelcee Thompson and Misty Muniz.

GAME 2 NOTES
- Six Mustangs posted hits in the game
- Peyton Helton was handed the loss, allowing 14 hits, eight runs and four walks while striking out four
- Shea Ibrahim went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Allie Smith was 3-for-4 and Shanna McBroom finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored  
- Alexis Alfonso allowed six hits and one walk with four strikeouts to earn the win in the circle for WT
 
STAT OF THE GAME
14 – Midwestern State allowed West Texas A&M to 14 hits, the fourth highest for an opponent this season
