SAN ANGELO, Texas – Midwestern State blasted three home runs in game one of Sunday's doubleheader but Angelo State left fielder Kenedy Urbany went 2-for-3 with a three-run shot and pitcher Brandy Marlett fanned eight batters to propel Angelo State to a series win with a 7-3 victory at Mayer Field.
Senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson extended her Lone Star Conference career home run record to 64 in the fourth inning while junior catcher
Baylee Voigt and junior pitcher
Erin Knox each recorded their seventh homers of the season to drive in all three runs for Midwestern State
(22-21, 7-12 LSC).
Angelo State (25-15, 13-10 LSC) grabbed an early 3-0 advantage in the first frame behind Urbany's long ball. Urbany also came around to score the fourth run of the game for the Rambelles in the bottom of the third, leading off with a double down the left field line before reaching home on a pair of groundouts.
Vinson and Voigt cut the ASU lead in half in the top of the fourth with solo shots to left field to put the Mustangs on the board.
The Rambelles tacked two more runs in the fifth behind a double by first baseman Alexis Evans and a throwing error in the MSU infield for a 7-2 score.
Knox sent a pitch over the left field fence for MSU's third home run of the game in the sixth inning but the Mustangs would be limited to just one hit the rest of the contest for the 7-3 final. Knox (8-5) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing six hits, five earned runs and one walk while fanning a pair of batters.
