Nine-run fifth carries Mustangs to series finale win over Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – A nine-run fifth inning propelled Midwestern State to a series finale win over Angelo State Sunday afternoon at Mayer Field.

Junior catcher Baylee Voigt belted out her second home run of the day and eighth of the season to finish 3-for-4 while matching a career-high four RBI. Senior center fielder Haley Howerton also put together a strong outing for Midwestern State (23-21, 8-12 LSC), finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Trailing 5-1 coming into the fifth inning, senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson led off the big inning for the Mustangs with a single to right field before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Howerton drove in the first run of the inning with a single up the middle to plate Vinson. A throwing error by pitcher Morgan Hill scored Howerton before Voigt sent a pitch over the center field wall to even up the contest at 5-all.

A second error of the inning in the ASU outfield scored two additional runs for the Mustangs while a bases loaded walk for junior first baseman Erin Knox plated another run for the Maroon and Gold. Voigt capped off the inning with two more RBI after a single to left field to give MSU a 10-5 advantage. It was the third nine-run inning of the season for MSU, also putting up nine-run frames in wins over Eastern New Mexico (Feb. 27) and Colorado State-Pueblo (Feb. 14).

Angelo State (25-16, 13-11 LSC) took control of the game early on with a five-run first with four runs coming with two outs. Second baseman Bailey Wallace gave the Rambelles a 1-0 advantage with an RBI single up the middle before third baseman Lanie Robinson doubled to right center to plate three runs for a 4-0 lead. Catcher Taegan Kirk rounded out the ASU scoring in the inning with an RBI single to right.

Facing a 10-5 deficit, the Rambelles threatened in the sixth inning by loading the bases with no outs. However, the MSU defense held strong as a pop foul, force out at home and a groundout prevented ASU from causing any damage for the Mustangs.

The Rambelles cut into their deficit in the seventh with a three-run inning behind four hits. ASU put the tying at the plate with two outs but redshirt freshman pitcher Peyton Helton fanned pinch hitter Riley Adams for the final out of the game.

Helton improved to 6-8 on the season with a complete game outing while Hill dropped to 5-5 with the loss in the circle.

Midwestern State returns to Mustangs Park next weekend for a four-game LSC series against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs first take the field with a doubleheader Friday at 5 p.m. before concluding the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
