WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State claimed a series win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, earning a split with the Javelinas following a 9-2 game one victory and a 10-1 run-rule defeat in five innings in the series finale.

Prior to the start of Saturday's doubleheader, the softball program honored seniors Haley Howerton, Katelyn Vinson and Chelsey Wall as they played their final home games at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern State moved to 29-27 on the season while finishing Lone Star Conference play with a 14-18 record to earn the No. 6 seed in next weekend's LSC Tournament. The Mustangs clinched the final tournament spot Friday night following a sweep of the Javelinas. Midwestern State will face No. 3 Cameron Friday, Apr. 29 at 11 a.m. at West Texas A&M's Schaeffer Park in Canyon.

Midwestern began the day belting out 13 hits with four Mustangs registering two hits apiece in a 9-2 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville (21-33, 10-21 LSC).

The Mustangs put up a three-run frame in the first inning on two hits and one error to take an early 3-0 advantage. Vinson began the game with a walk before a wild pitch and a Howerton single put her in scoring position. Howerton stole second, leading up to a wild pitch that brought in Vinson for a 1-0 MSU lead. An RBI single for junior designated hitter Baylee Voigt and a groundout scored two additional runs for the Mustangs to give the home team the momentum early.

Another error for the Javelinas plated the first of two runs for the Mustangs in the third inning before a single down the left field line for sophomore catcher Amanda Thomas propelled the Mustangs to a 5-0 lead.

Midwestern continued to stretch its lead in the fourth with Vinson coming around to score her second run of the game on a sacrifice fly from junior pitcher Erin Knox after leading off the inning with a double. Junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes drove in the second run of the frame for a 7-0 advantage with a single to right field to plate Howerton, who reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning.

TAMUK lit up the scoreboard in the sixth inning with its first two runs of the game off an RBI double from designated hitter Roxy Chapa and an error in the MSU outfield.

Voigt tallied her second home run of the series in the bottom half of the inning, leading off with a solo shot to left field for an 8-2 lead. An RBI single to right for junior shortstop Tammy Viliamu capped off the MSU scoring for the game for the 9-2 final.

Knox earned the win in the circle for the Mustangs, improving to 9-7 on the season after allowing six hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out six batters. Michaela Huebotter fell to 1-5 after giving up five hits, four earned runs and three walks in 2.2 innings for the Javelinas.

TAMUK turned the tables on MSU in the series finale, recording 12 hits while limiting the Mustangs to just three for the run-rule win in game two.

Center fielder Haley Boyett plated the first run for the Javelinas in the first inning, singling and stealing second before coming around to score on a Chapa single to center.

A three-run shot to left for Rachael Longoria highlighted a four-run second for the Javelinas to extend their advantage to 5-0. First baseman Victoria Schoonard-Saborio followed with a three-run bomb of her own in the fourth as the Javelinas plated four additional runs for the 9-0 lead.

Boyett posted the third homer of the game for TAMUK in the fifth inning for the 10-0 advantage before Knox drove in the lone run for the Mustangs in the bottom half of the inning, sending a pitch to left center for a double to score Howerton, who reached on a two-out walk. Knox led the Mustangs with two hits for the game.

Freshman Makenzi Harris took the loss for the Mustangs, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 1.1 innings to fall to 9-7. Carlie Clark picked up the win for TAMUK, giving up just three hits, one earned run and three walks with five strikeouts to improve to 10-11 overall.
