Rambelles power past Mustangs for Saturday sweep

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State put together a pair of big innings to earn a Saturday sweep over Midwestern State with an 8-3 win in game two at Mayer Field.

Angelo State (24-15, 12-10 LSC) used a three-run third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit before tacking on four runs in the sixth en route to its second win of the day.

Senior center fielder Haley Howerton and junior first baseman Erin Knox each belted out two hits to lead Midwestern State (22-20, 7-11 LSC) while senior third baseman Katelyn Vinson recorded a team-high two RBI in the loss.

The Mustangs struck first with Knox doubling to left center to score Vinson in the top of third for a 1-0 MSU lead. However, the lead didn't last long for the Maroon and Gold with a ground-rule double for pitcher Morgan Hill plating the first run of the game for the Rambelles in the bottom half of the frame. A pair of RBI singles capped off the inning for ASU to take a 3-1 advantage.

After a bases-loaded hit by pitch added a run for ASU in the fourth, the Rambelles scored four runs all with two outs in the sixth with a couple of RBI singles and a two-RBI double for first baseman Alexis Evans to stretch the ASU lead to 8-1.

The Mustangs tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh with Vinson singling to right field to score Howerton and junior shortstop Tammy Viliamu, who both singled earlier in the frame, for an 8-3 final.

Hill (5-4) earned the win in the circle for ASU, allowing seven hits, three runs and three walks while totaling three strikeouts in a complete game outing. Freshman Makenzi Harris (7-4) took the loss for MSU after giving up three hits, two runs and one walk in 2.0 innings of action.

Midwestern State concludes the series with Angelo State tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
