WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson made Lone Star Conference history Wednesday evening at Mustangs Park as the Southlake native blasted her 63rd career home run to become the all-time LSC leader in the Mustangs' 8-4 win over Oklahoma Christian.
Vinson's record-breaking home run came in the sixth inning, sending
a pitch over the left center field fence to drive in a pair of runs and help Midwestern State (22-18) take a 7-4 lead over the Lady Eagles.
After tying the LSC record back on March 16, Vinson moved ahead of former West Texas A&M standout Renee Erwin, who also set the conference record as a senior on April 10, 2015.
The Mustangs offense came alive in the third inning with a four-run frame, loading the bases with one out before a wild pitch scored senior second baseman
Chelsey Wall for the first run of the game. A bases-loaded double to right center for junior first baseman
Erin Knox drove in two more runs for the Mustangs to push the advantage to 3-0. Knox then came around to score for a 4-0 lead following a passed ball and an error in the Oklahoma Christian (15-20) infield.
The Lady Eagles evened up the contest in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs to force a pitching change for the Mustangs. A wild pitch plated OC's first run of the game before designated hitter Niki Davidson sent a pitch over the left field wall for a 4-4 ballgame.
Midwestern countered in the bottom half of the inning with junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes singling to center field to drive in Knox, who recorded her second double of the game to lead off the frame.
Following Vinson's two-run bomb in the sixth, a single to right field for junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt capped off the inning for Midwestern to put the Mustangs ahead 8-4.
Redshirt freshman
Peyton Helton (5-8) struck out the side in the seventh, finishing with six strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work to earn the win in the circle.
Vinson led the Mustangs at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing with two runs scored and two RBI. Knox also put together a strong outing, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Midwestern State hits the road this weekend for a four-game LSC series against Angelo State at Mayer Field in San Angelo. Friday's action gets underway with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. while first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
