WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior pitcher
Erin Knox threw a complete game with a season-high six strikeouts while belting a two-run home run in the fifth inning to carry Midwestern State to a Saturday sweep and series win over Tarleton State
with a 3-1 victory.
Midwestern State (21-17, 7-9 LSC) claimed the series over the TexAnns by winning the final three games of the four-game weekend slate for its second Lone Star Conference series win of the season.
Knox limited Tarleton State (15-16, 2-10 LSC) to just four hits on the day with three coming in the seventh inning. The West native held the TexAnns without a hit until the fifth inning when catcher Alyssa Ringhausen recorded a one-out single up the middle.
Midwestern State lit up the scoreboard in the in the bottom half of the fifth with Knox crushing a pitch over the left field fence to put the Mustangs on top 2-0 after senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson had singled up the middle on the previous at bat.
The Mustangs added to their lead in the sixth with a groundout plating freshman right fielder
Taylor Mordecai, who led off the inning with a double down the right field line.
Tarleton attempted a rally in its final at bat with the TexAnns putting two runners on with no outs. Left fielder Taylor Fitzgerald broke the shutout with two outs in the frame with a double to center field to plate a run for Tarleton. However, the rally would fall short for the visitors on a flyout to left field.
Knox moved to 8-2 on the season in the circle while Haley Freyman suffered the loss for the TexAnns after allowing 10 hits, three runs and two walks with two strikeouts to drop to 12-12 on the year.
Senior center fielder Haley Howerton led the Mustangs at the plate with three hits while Knox finished with two hits and two RBI.
Midwestern State returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 30 with a non-conference doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian at Mustangs Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
