Mustangs to host No. 10 SBU, WNMU this week

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State looks to extend its winning streak to seven matches this week when the No. 22 Mustangs host No. 10 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and Western New Mexico at the MSU Tennis Center.
 
Midwestern State will look to avenge a 2015 NCAA quarterfinal loss to Southwest Baptist with a 1 p.m. Wednesday matchup against the 10th-ranked Bearcats. The Mustangs will close their homestand against future Lone Star Conference opponent Western New Mexico Friday at 11 a.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
– Midwestern State swept its way to a 3-0 record last weekend with 9-0 wins over NJCAA No. 9 New Mexico Military Institute and in-region foes Texas-Permian Basin and Colorado Mesa to push its win streak to five
– Senior Lauren Pineda and freshmen Eirini Kontaki and Greta Lazzarotto each collected six wins on the weekend to lead the Mustangs
 
PINEDA CAPTURES 100TH CAREER WIN
Lauren Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to reach 100 career wins following a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa Sunday to improve to 100-37 while wearing the Maroon and Gold
– Pineda's 100th win moved her into a tie for sixth on the all-time wins list with former teammate Taylor Coffman
– Pineda follows Lacey Wuthrich (2002-05), Emilee Black (2000-03), Brooke Gray (2000-03), Sara Butler (1999-2002), Marsha Meyer (1998-2001) and Coffman (2012-15) in the 100-win club
– Wuthrich holds the program wins record title with a 138-44 career mark (.758) during her four-year career
– Black (135), Gray (131), Butler (129) and Meyer (111) round out the top five in career wins at MSU
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State comes into the week at 6-1 overall and 5-0 against NCAA Division II foes this season
Lauren Pineda is a combined 13-0 this season with a 6-0 record in singles and 7-0 mark in doubles play with sophomore Amy Clifton
– Senior Lindsay Nochowicz is also undefeated this season with a 3-0 singles record and 5-0 slate in doubles with Eirini Kontaki
Greta Lazzarotto ties Pineda with a team-best six wins with a 6-1 record while also going 6-1 in doubles with senior partner Maddie Schorlemmer
– Schorlemmer has posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles to lead the Mustangs and is ranked 37th nationally following a strong fall campaign
 
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
– Southwest Baptist is 6-0 on the season and will face conference foe Emporia State (Kan.) prior to Wednesday's meeting with the Mustangs
– The Bearcats have pulled out three 5-4 victories this season including their season opener vs. Tarleton State in Arkadelphia, Ark.
– SBU sports two top-30 singles players in No. 6 Maria Josie Zehnder and No. 29 Christina Zentai
– The duo top the Central Region rankings and team up to form the 13th-ranked doubles team in the country
– Klara Vickov and Lani Tuemmers also appear in the Central Region rankings at 16th and 18th, respectively
– Head coach John Bryant is in his 50th season coaching at Southwest Baptist with a 203-114 record as the Bearcat head women's tennis coach
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State holds a 6-3 record in the all-time series against Southwest Baptist dating back to the 1999 season
– The Bearcats have come away as the victors in the last three meetings, all coming by a 5-4 decision
– SBU earned two wins over the Mustangs in 2015 including a win in the NCAA quarterfinals in Surprise, Ariz.
– The two teams have met just once in Wichita Falls with SBU recording a win in 2014
– MSU's last win over the Bearcats came in 2013 with a 6-3 victory at SBU
 
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
– Western New Mexico is 4-8 on the season, recording a 2-2 record last week in Midland
– The Mustangs are 0-5 away from home this season, falling to three nationally-ranked Division II programs
– Ashley Newell is the No. 1 singles player for the Mustangs while teaming up with Gemma Goodland at No. 1 doubles
– Yair Banuelos is in his third season with the Mustangs, carrying a 21-39 career record
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State and Western New Mexico have met just once on the courts with MSU recording a 7-2 neutral site win over WNMU in Portales, N.M. in 2007
 
MUSTANGS REMAIN AT NO. 22 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State remained at No. 22 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national rankings, released three weeks ago by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)
– The Mustangs also stayed at No. 3 in the South Central Region, coming in behind No. 11 St. Mary's and No. 20 Cameron
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted an 83-37 record (.692) with the men's team while recording an 89-41 mark (.685) with the women for a combined 172-78 (.688)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 411-257 (.615) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (225-147, .605) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (186-110, .628), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State will travel to Colorado for a five-match road trip during spring break, playing No. 3 Saint Leo (Fla.), No. 9 Hawaii Pacific and Metro State at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver before taking on NCAA Division I Air Force in Colorado Springs and Colorado State-Pueblo in Pueblo
