PORTALES, N.M. — Midwestern State matched a school record by mashing six home runs while holding on for a 13-11 win in the series finale over Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon at ENMU Softball Field.
The Mustangs took three of four from the Greyhounds to improve to 15-9 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Midwestern welcomes No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M next weekend for its home opening series at Mustangs Park with doubleheaders on Friday (5 and 7 p.m. ) and Saturday (2 and 4 p.m.).
Eastern New Mexico put up quite a fight scoring in every inning book ended with three runs in the first and sixth innings.
Midwestern used the big inning to overcome a six-run, fifth-inning deficit as
Misty Muniz connected on a two-run homer and
Katelyn Vinson launched three-run bomb while
Makenzi Harris laced two-run double down the left-field line as part of a nine-run inning to give the Mustangs a 9-6 edge.
With the three-run shot, Vinson became MSU's all-time RBI leader with 200 passing
Kelley Schaefer, who had 199 from 2012-15. Vinson's homer was her school record 59th of her career as she needs three more to match former West Texas A&M standout Renee Erwin for the LSC all-time record. Erwin stroked 162 from 2012-15.
Harris,
Taylor Mordecai and
Chelsey Wall drilled consecutive homers in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 12-7 while
Baylee Voigt crushed another solo shot in the seven to give MSU a 13-8 lead.
Eastern New Mexico responded with back-to-back homers by Audrey Velasquez and Erikka Burke in the bottom of the seventh and Kyra Sirag drove in another with a single left field before MSU's
Peyton Helton close out the game for her third save of the season.
The Mustangs' offense produced 20 hits in a game for the second straight day and for the fifth time in program history which is one off the 21 hits set against Southern Arkansas on Feb. 3, 2014.
Voigt paced the attack by going 4-for-5 with a double and her fourth homer of the season, while
Taylor Bermudes and
Erin Knox had three hits each.
Junior
Tayler Jerrick improved to 2-2 in the circle allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 inning of relief.
Eastern New Mexico fell to 8-10 and 1-3.
